If a person gets pulled over and they accidentally left their driver's license at home, what happens? Do they get hauled off downtown or what?

In MN, you have something like 72 hours to produce your license.
By giving the officer your full name, address and date of birth, he should be able to look it up on his MDC (laptop in the car) or have dispatch look it up.
I have memorized my license number in case I ever lose my license. It makes it easier for them to issue me a duplicate license.
From what I've heard, if you happen to be driving when stopped and they can't 'find you' in their data base, they will tow and impound your car and issue you a citation for driving without a license.
If by chance you have a licensed passenger in the car with you, that person will have to drive and your car won't get impounded.

Here in Va, you can get a ticket for not having your license with you...even though you are licensed to drive...what I usually do is run a check to see if the driver is licensed and then just tell them to not forget their license in the future and let them go....usually if you do get a ticket for not having your license with you...the judge will dismiss the charge when you bring your license to court...so I see no need in giving a ticket...but you wouldnt be hauled downtown for not having your license at the time of the stop... :)

Here in Tx it's the same as in VA....I would run the DL by name and date of birth and get the physicals on the person & see if they matched up.....we had a lot of mexicans who would not have a DL or insurance ....commonly refered to as a "no gotta, no gotta"...in that that case they gotta go.....

Well in my case it depends on how cute you are!!! Actually it would depend on how your demeanor and if I think you are telling me the truth. I hear that I left my ID/License home on at least 1 in 5 traffic stops; if I believe them I will let that slide, depending on why I stopped them to begin with(minor stops or equipment violations, DWI,reckless driving and speed + 15 get no breaks) . If I don't believe them then I run a check on License and Registration and 7 out 10 it will come back with a hit (Un registered, revoked or suspended) After 25 years you just know when and who is lying and who is not.

§383.23 Commercial driver's license.
(a) General rule. (1) Effective April 1, 1992, no person shall operate a commercial motor vehicle unless such person has taken and passed written and driving tests which meet the Federal standards contained in Subparts F, G, and H of this part for the commercial motor vehicle that person operates or expects to operate.
(a)(2) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may legally operate a CMV unless such person possesses a CDL which meets the standards contained in subpart J of this part, issued by his/ her State or jurisdiction of domicile.
The driver may be placed OOS until the a copy of the CDL is acquired.
The same applies to non-CDL vehicles:
Subpart B — Qualification and Disqualification of Drivers
§391.11 General qualifications of drivers.
(b)(5) Has a currently valid commercial motor vehicle operator's license issued only by one State or jurisdiction;
I strongly recommend drivers photo copy their CDL and medical card and place them in a binder in the truck for safe keeping. While memorizing your DL number maybe helpful, there is no guarantee you are that person.
FYI, about 1989 my brother managed to obtain a duplicate license from California with my info and his picture. When I moved to Colorado I found out about it. Between the time I left California, drove to Colorado, cancelled my California DL and obtained a Colorado DL (about seven days) my brother managed to get a DUI with my license.
Scenario two, a driver with a revoked CDL obtained a copy of his brothers CDL (also revoked) and presented it as his own not knowing his brother's CDL was revoked.
So please excuse my tough stance on demanding to see a physical copy of the CDL.
Be safe.

In the great state of North Carolina I can do one of two things. Run your name by name and date of birth to get your license number or if you know your number I can run it for validity on my computer or through our communications center.
But if you don't have your license on you I can charge "failure to carry your license" but I wouldn't unless you try to BS me with a fake name. If you are straight up and forgot, I can work with you. If you want to BS me, I will make your day as bad as I can. Honesty, it works!!

as a c.d.l. holder it is a major ticket not to be in possesion of my d.l. It's not worth the serious violation so I keepit in my wallet, in my pocket or within reach in the truck at all times,

I got pulled into the W Memphis AR scale for a paperwork check. Carry a hip pocket wallet at all times.
Nice scalemaster asked for license and med card...went to pull it out...AND THE LICENSE WASN'T THERE!!! OH NO!!!
Anyways, he was really nice about it. I had all sorts of other ID on me...bank card, SS card, Voter registration card. So he looked me up and gave me a warning and a paper to show that I was licensed.
About two weeks before this, I had gone in to renew only to find out that I needed a certified copy of birth certificate. They had put a sticker on the back of my license...that was the last time I remembered having it in my hand.
So, I called the boss to get into the yard asap to get a new license. In the meantime my mom had found a certified copy of my BC...got the new license yada yada.
About 3 months after the AR mess up, I was home and went to make a copy of something using my printer/scanner. I lifted the lid...AND LOW AND BEHOLD there was my old license.
After getting the extension sticker on the back from the license bureau, I had came home and made a copy of the license back to show it had been extended for my boss. Forgot to take the license out...my bad!!!
It is funny now, but I thought I was a goner in AR that day!:o
