I would be glad to answer any and all questions about Prime. Straightforward and honest. Some may like the answers I give....some will call me a liar.....because they don't want the truth told. :toughcrowd: But, either way, you got questions, I'll answer them.
They are not perfect. You CAN make a good living. You can also lose your shirt if you don't take care of your business. I have a buddy that has 3 trucks on with them.....and is getting ready to put on 2 more.
When we finish our lease....and get our money....we will be buying a truck and leasing it back on with them. Unless something REALLY  good comes along that is....

I actually completed my first lease with them in 92'. But, my kids were just starting to get into sports at school and they wanted me home....and I was ready to spend more time with them(and Momma). So, I went home and ran local for about 14 years.....First hauling gas....and then from 96-07 I ran for Con-way. Best job I ever quit! But, the girls got grown.....and momma was sittin' at home alone every night....and she had a bright idea one day....."Lets go truckin'" So, here we are......almost 2 years later....June will be the beginning of our 3rd year on this lease....and we should be through with it sometime around Christmas. We would have been through sooner.....but, we lost my Mom last April(08) and then had our 1st grand-baby in May.....So, we ended up taking a few weeks off. Momma took more than I did (Grannys are allowed she said)....

No...we're not recruiters. Yes, I do tell the truth about what you can expect at Prime. And, yes....we do have our own forum.....as do a lot of other companies.

To be honest, the forum at Prime SUCKS big time. I have seen members get banned for just saying anything slightly negative at Prime. The only way you two are making it at Prime is by volume. For a single driver it would be next to impossible or success cases would be very rare. Suxess would be more like it.:lmao[1]: There used to be a guy on the Prime forum that went by BigTex. He was a successful independent operator with his own authority that told it like it was and got banned for it. At least I think he did since I didn't see any more posts from him for a while. It doesn't take rocket science to do the math and see that a fleace purchase is a big plus for only 2 entities. One would be Prime and the other would be the shipper.Prime makes a killing off the fleace purchase by buying a truck outright and leasing them out for over 40% more than what they bought them for. The shipper gets a good deal since they can find idiot operators to move their loads at the cheapest rates. I have talked to Prime fleace operators that have moved loads for .75cpm GROSS just to get from one bad area to ANOTHER bad area or just to get home or to a preferred destination. I am not doubting you two are doing well at Prime, however it is because of putting in twice as much driving time as a regular solo driver. Not to mention the truck may have hardly ever broke down, which if that was the case than it is by pure luck. The lease deal is not even designed to be a success. For every few that succeed there are many more that don't. You think Prime doesn't know that?

See....there is one of the misconceptions. Prime is not in the "Lease to own" business. It is an outright lease. When the term of the lease.... 3 yrs or 462K DISPATCHED miles is up....you turn in the truck and get back any funds that you have acquired. In our case it will be between $16K-$20K. Depending on how well you take care of the truck.
My wife wasn't sure about the kind of money we would be making as a husband/wife team......NOW she is! And, she wasn't sure she would want to drive.....but, she figured out that she likes it......and she likes the freedom of being able to take off for as long as she likes.....when she likes......so, no company job for her!! LOL
But, now that she knows.....we'll be buying our truck after we get our authority...(Taxes)

Hmmmm....by the wording in your post, you sound awfully familiar....almost like BigTex...He was a successful independent operator with his own authority that told it like it was and got banned for it. His one shortcoming was when we actually got him to post his numbers...and he realized that for all his trouble...(or his dads....I think his dad financed his operation)....he was barely doing any better than our so called "fleece" ops (most of which hadn't been at it nearly as long as he said he had.....At least I think he did since I didn't see any more posts from him for a while. He and his sidekick....I can't remember his name....actually started making some good posts when they figured out that we weren't in that much of a different boat than his dad. I have talked to Prime fleace operators that have moved loads for .75cpm GROSS just to get from one bad area to ANOTHER bad area or just to get home or to a preferred destination. Those are decisions made by the individual ops. There are no forced dispatches for L/O's or O/O's that have their trucks on with Prime. And as A LOT of guys move from a Company Driver mentality(miles....miles....miles)..... to a Business Owner mentality(show me the money, baby)....some never quite catch on. That can be said in any business...unfortunately, the trucking industry is not a kind place for those not equipped to run their own business.....I am not doubting you two are doing well at Prime, however it is because of putting in twice as much driving time as a regular solo driver. Not necessarily so....there are weeks that we take it easy on the miles....we don't have to run 5000 miles a week if the REVENUE is good. These days, that's a little harder to do....but, you can't just lay that off on Prime....EVERYBODY is feeling the pinch right now. Not to mention the truck may have hardly ever broke down, which if that was the case than it is by pure luck. The lease deal is not even designed to be a success. For every few that succeed there are many more that don't. We've had our breakdowns....just last week we had to have a new condenser put on the truck....Momma woke up hot....and not in a good way....I had noticed that it wasn't cooling as well as it had...but, she had NO A/C in the bunk....we stopped to have our service done(helps prevent breakdowns).....and had a new condenser and 14.8 lbs of freon added......(I'm guessing $1000...don't know...It was warrantied)You think Prime doesn't know that? OF COUSE PRIME IS IN IT TO MAKE MONEY.....And SO ARE WE.
A lot of people think it's easy to just jump in a truck and make a killing! It's not. Unfortunately, there is only one way to prove it to the majority of folks.

Yeah, I've told lots of guys to stay at home.......if you got a wife and small kids....do something local....hell, work 2 jobs...but, be there for your kids. They only grow up once.....and guys that live on the road miss SO MUCH. That's why I went home from mid 92 to mid 07. And if Momma hadn't said "Let's go".....I'd still be at Con-way....with better benefits than 90% of the rest of the industry. But, we haven't looked back. She gets to see the country that I used to just tell her about....and we take off for a few days here and there...rent a car...and do the tourist thing.

LOL,now that is funny.I don't remember him anywhere mentioning his Dad was financing his operation. From what I remember his numbers surpassed the fleace-ops and his cpm was lower and his revenue was higher,at least from what he posted. I always take internet posts with a big grain of salt however I enjoyed reading his and his sidekick Leftlaneusa's posts. According to you the only so-called good posts over at the happy Prime place are the ones in support of Prime regardless of anything else. By running team Prime and the shippers are making the money by moving twice the amount of freight with one truck at a discounted rate while you two do 3 times the work. BTW if you really are doing well at Prime as you claim to than please don't bother pursueing your own authority. There are already more than enough trucks out there and you will just be adding to the already worsening problem of overcapacity. The no-forced dispatch claim is a big joke by Prime and other carriers. If you refuse a load that really needs to be moved than chances are great that your miles and revenue,as low as it already is,will dwindle even lower and eventually Prime will find a way to get rid of you. Having your authority is the closest thing to nonforced dispatch however you still have to go where the market is busiest and you won't be profitable for very long if you refuse loads going into busy areas or don't know how much to negotiate for loads going into bad areas. I also remember a victim of Prime that got banned from there that went by Roachcoach driver. Due to Prime starving him out to where he couldn't complete his lease he was forced to buy an old roachcoach truck and sell worn-out burritos on the street. I guess Prime wanted to quickly ban him from their board to cover up his story. Let's face it. There is no way you could survive averaging less than 4000 miles a week with a 2800-3000.00 a month lease-payment at Prime's freight rates. I have seen first-hand what Prime is charging the customers(due to me being underbidded by some of them)and most of their rates are on the low side more than they are on the high side and that doesn't even include deadhead or out-of-route miles.A breakdown costing only 1000.00 once in a while is hardly what I would call a breakdown. Prime's and every other Fleace-purchase deal is specifically designed for the operator to run 4000 miles a week or more with an average of 40 weeks a year on the road, roughly 160,000 miles a year. How do I know this?I have talked to someone I used to know in operations. I am not doing that great right now and I have my own authority however I make the same revenue driving less than 80,000 miles a year and my costs are lower than having a 3000.00 a month fleace payment. Plus another advantage of buying a truck outright instead of leasing it is that when the payments are over you don't have to return it back to the carrier and you actually have an equipment of your own to sale instead of running yourself silly and paying for maintenance only to give it back to the company in the end.

Some sites have members that are more into telling it like it really is than others. While some drivers will say anything for those recruiting bonuses (which are nothing more than company-paid incentives for their drivers to not tell the truth), others can be found that are straight up and honest.
If companies like Prime and other typical dwelling outfits were truly that damn good to work for they would not need a recruiting department and have to spend thousands of dollars a week on bringing in new drivers to keep warm bodies in those seats. Think about it.

After I read about Roachcoach driver's emotional story of his horrid experience at Prime I have become very paranoid of fleace deals. No thanks,I will stay where I am at since at least I have some say in what I want to or need to charge to move a load if market conditions warrant. If you enjoy averaging 4000 miles a week as a team and paying a 3000.00 a month lease bill for a truck that will never be yours than more power to you.
As far as not bringing up stuff from other sites I agree to a certain extent however I was just pointing out that a lot of the banning I have seen at the Prime site was for the most part unwarranted. You people need to get a little humor and not take people on the net so seriously.

Capt. Chaos.... I know you won't believe this....but, they actually send people home EVERY WEEK. People come in there and don't meet the physical guidelines....they lie on their apps....they forget to tell about being a felon....all kinds of things. Two of the biggest things that gets people sent home is High Blood Pressure and Sugar in their Urine. People have medical issues and don't even realize it. It surprises a lot of people as to how thorough of a background check they do. And, there isn't a company out here with more than 500 drivers that doesn't have recruiting departments...and spend $$$ on getting drivers to come in. Just listen to the Sirius/XM radios....you can hear all kinds of companies trying to get drivers. It's the same everywhere. They're all competing for the same drivers. And every company of size has referral bonuses. It's that simple. I just started a thread on "that other" site and started posting facts....and people started asking questions.....and certain people didn't like it. I just hope this site is truly out for the driver. And from what I've seen.....It is! And I like that.
Jack5....I'd be interested in knowing what Roachcoach Drivers Fleet Managers name and his unit number was when he SAID he was there. I'm not calling him a liar......but, anyone can SAY they have been somewhere. I'm not saying people don't hire on and then down the road a few months problems develop......and 98% of the people in this world won't blame themselves for failing.....But, if a close look is taken....you can see that it's not 100% the fault of the Company that they went south.
And you claim to be an O/O....why do you always worry about how many miles people are running? Most O/O's I know worry about REVENUE....not miles. If we can run 4000 miles a week and gross $6000.....I think that's enough to make it. We don't have to run 5000-6000 miles a week to make a living. (SOME WEEKS WE DO THOUGH!!)
These days, it is taking more instead of less.....but, that is industry wide, unless someone has a niche that they fill. They are the ones that others envy. I KNOW this is not for everybody.....and we aren't planning on leasing another truck. But, it has worked out good for us. My wife has gotten to see how the business works....and she knows now....EVEN working for Prime.....that there is good money out there. So, when we buy our truck.....It'll just be better. And the good thing is....when we get finished....we will be getting a check for $18000 - $20+K. So, she has basically been paid to learn the business....I don't see any harm in that. And I think it's worked for us.

"a check for $18000 - $20+K"
You act like that is a lot of money.
I still want a good answer as to how the lease is better than just buying a truck with financing from your bank?
Or in my case, paying for the truck with a check from my bank account.
From what I understand here, you have all the responsibilities of owning a truck, but yet Prime keeps you on a short leash. You are stuck with whatever crap Prime wants to feed you.
I was leased to Ace Doran. It was a good company. I was doing all local work. Then the local terminal closed. It wasn't Ace Doran's fault, and it wasn't my fault. But after the terminal closed there was no one out there beating on doors for the local work.
So I was forced to get my own authority and insurance. If I didn't have the title to the truck it would have been a catastrophe.
If you have the company you work for holding the title to your truck, and that company loses a big account, you can't go find work elsewhere. You are stuck. You get whatever they want to feed you, or maybe nothing at all.
It really sounds a lot like being a share cropper.

It was just a way for me to convince my wife that we should take the plunge. And....She didn't have her license until I trained her. I contacted more than one company to see if I would be able to train her.....And was told it would take 3-6mos before I would be allowed to. I did not want to be a company driver....I prefer to set my own home time.....and have the freedom that I have now. NOW....she knows we can make it....EVEN during these hard times.....and we WILL be buying a truck. I know $20K isn't a lot of money.....but, she sees it as a "sort of payoff" for doing the lease. And if she's happy.....we're all happy!
Or in my case, paying for the truck with a check from my bank account.
From what I understand here, you have all the responsibilities of owning a truck, but yet Prime keeps you on a short leash. You are stuck with whatever crap Prime wants to feed you. Everyone thinks that Prime pays crap....there are some crap loads....but, you don't have to take them. Sure, coming off the east coast you might have to go with a lower rate than you want.....But, you can choose how long you have to taste the crap. We don't take any load coming off the east coast with more than 700 miles on it. That's far enough to get us away from there....and short enough we can do it overnight.....so, we're not spending a lot of time on junk. Same with FL....I'm not gonna run a 44K load of juice to Phoenix paying crap....when I can get a load of flowers or plants that will get us to the good freight areas. You guys assume we just take whatever they throw at us.....IT'S NOT SO. That simple.
No one is holding my title. We can walk away at any time and not be responsible for a dime.....nada....nothing. I'm glad that things worked out for you.....but, you can't tell me that everyone that buys a truck and gets their own authority hits it good like you have. The truck lots are littered with the fortunes that men (and women) have dreamed of. That's why my wife wanted to try this first.
It really sounds a lot like being a share cropper.
You can call it what you want. But, it has been a profitable experience for us. And, to take someone from a steady 8hr a day.....guaranteed 40....and show them that they can surpass their dreams.....It's been worth all the criticism that you guys can throw out there at us.
I know it's not the perfect way to get started.....but, it has worked for us....and we know LOTS of couples that are doing the same thing.... And we see lots of couples in trucks from every company out there doing the same thing.
But....you guys have it all figured out....we are the losers....none of your friends that are TRUE O/O'S have failed. Well.....that gives us something to aspire to. Thanks for all the lessons!

You think none of your buddies would go in and undercut you??? If you do, you need to quit smokin' whatever you're smokin'. Like you said....it's business. Why don't you guys post up your customers....and tell each other what kind of rates you're getting? You know good and well why.....you would run out of friends real quick.....every one of you would undercut someone to get a good load.....you can deny it....but, you'll be lyin'....to everyone here...but, most of all....to yourself.

Oh!!...my bad!!!... I thought the topic was Prime..
Yes ..I've had so called friends sneak under my skirt and steal customers...that's ok...We will still be here when the dust settles...No need to get nasty or defensive...You just don't seem to get the concept of working for more $$ for less miles...but hey!! what ever floats your boat...If you can convince folks that is the way to go, or that they can do it... and earn yourself some more $$...knock your socks off...
You seem to be getting slightly bent cause questions are being asked...and of course... as is the nature of folks... to assume.....I learned a long time ago it is much easier to catch flies with honey...Good Luck and ya'll drive careful...

As a matter of fact we DO share our rates via PM. There are a few here who know what my rates are.We just don't post them out in the open forum because you never know what broker or carrier is trolling these boards trying to see what the going rates are. BTW I have also done some brokering on the side so I have an idea of what's out there. No I will NOT post any information on customers out here in the open. BTW not all undercutting is done intentionally. What pays OK for one truck might be another truck's treasure. The big carriers like Prime however go in and willingly undercut us for the sole purpose of driving small carriers like us out of business. The main ground we have is to stick it to them when they are hurting for outside carriers to move a load. Like I said before,if you are satisfied running,or should I say,AVERAGING 4000 miles a week and be responsible for a 3000.00 month lease payment plus having to maintain a truck that will never be yours to own than more power to you. Shippers and brokers love people like you since they can move twice the amount of loads for the same rate or even less.

"but, you can't tell me that everyone that buys a truck and gets their own authority hits it good like you have."
Who said getting my own authority was a good thing? It was a survival move.
I made just as much money when I was leased to Ace Doran, AND I didn't have the hassles that having your own authority brings.
I had a nice cushy carefree life working out of their local terminal. Due to my abilities as a mechanic, and being a "can do" kind of guy, I helped them out a lot, and in return I got to "cherry pick" my loads. It was a great deal while it lasted.
Don't think that having " your own authority" is always better. The best deal is the one that makes the most money with the least amount of work.

No kidding!
Joethemechanic and Jack5 bring up some VERY VALID points.
Having your own authority (while it 'opens up' your possibilities/potential), adds to the paperwork and headaches.
Rates are discussed here.............mostly 'ballpark figures', but actual rates are usually discussed via PM. Jack5 and I (along with others), have discussed them several times.

Alrighty. Here is my side of the story. Slime,I mean Prime,PROMISED me I would make at least 4200 dollarz a week. They fogot to tell me that I had to buy my own fuel and pay fo my lease out o dat money.:36_1_50[1]: I wuz drivin 4200 miles for 4200 dollarz. Than when I looks at my settlement I see Slime had taken out 30% of my money too. I thought all that 4200 dollarz wuz mine So I went and gotz me mucho chrome at ma favorite chrome shop. Prime even gave me an advance to buy it all. When I gotz my settlement I wuz 3000.00 IN THA WHOLE.:duh2[1]: After I complain to Slime theyz cut ma miles from 4200 to lez than 2000 miles a week.[smilie=love sick.g: I wuz gettin 2000 miles for 2000.0 dollarz. I lost what little mulla I hadz left and had to quit Slime. And you know livin in the Big Apple gotz to be mucho expensive. So i spent what little mullah I hadz left and bought me a nize 1972 truck and turned it into a nize little catering truck. At least there ain't no competition with dumbazz lease pochase operators ova the rates and there aint too many catering trucks where Im at. Oh Steve and Lo when you get yo azz back to the Prime board tell Dr. Zebra I said thank ya fo banning me. I gotz an interview with Dateline NBC next week about lease pochase scams and the abuses of Prime. You allz have a good night and if yaz ever in the big apple and see a catering truck with 4200.00 worth of chrome on it just azk fo Roachcoach driver and I will getz a free sausage and pork burrito.:18_1_35[1]:

I attempted to talk some sense into those people at the Prime board but it's not my fault they don't want to listen to anyone with any real business sense after they allowed themselves to be brainwashed by those misleading recruiters.
If people in their right mind would take a little time to take notice of the consistent reports in regards to Prime cutting back on a driver's productivity as they get near the end of their lease term. They do it so the driver won't get their maintenance escrow (typically referred to as a "lease completion bonus") returned to them. Stories like that can be read at ripoffreport.com and that should tell people something.
There's a reason Prime can afford to haul freight for so cheap- their truck leasing company (Success Leasing) is the profit center that generates the largest amount of revenue under the corporate umbrella. Think about it- they buy cheap, stripped-down trucks at bulk fleet prices and then lease them to drivers for around $700+/week (which translates to $2,800 a month).
As long as there's an endless stream of people who don't know any better that are willing to fall for such a 'fleece' program like Prime has, their business model will always make money.
Joethemechanic

I really don't see how people doing the Prime lease consider themselves "Owner Operators".
Prime owns the truck, and Prime operates the truck.
All I see is an "end run" around the laws protecting employees.

Guys....I DO understand the bad feelings against companies like Prime. But, at the same time.....WE had a reason for going this route....you might not think it is a good enough reason....but, it's the truth. AND now that SWMBO is confident enough to take the plunge....that's exactly what we plan to do. I've never said that our situation is what I've always dreamed of....all I've said is that I realized when I was here in 92' (Before the Local stint) is that I could make a living there....and my wife could learn how to drive....and learn the business. I won't stay here forever. My dream would be for us to have a big shiny W-9 with AT LEAST a 96" house....and our daughter staying at home with our:15_2_138[1]: grand-babies (got another on the way!!!), with her making a living booking us loads....working for our company. That's the dream....but, unlike some of you....We have had to go about it a different way. Also, I've never claimed to be anything other than a LEASE/OP. I know there is a huge difference. And as far as the taxes.......sure makes it easier to get in a lower tax bracket!! LOL
I really do get it that you guys don't like Prime. But, when people ask....I'm gonna give them honest answers. And the honest answer is.... that we've been able to make a good living...AND my wife has gotten her license......AND this isn't the place for everybody.
Any of you that posted on "that other" board know that I NEVER told anybody that there weren't challenges and I NEVER said it would be easy. And even though I can't go back there.....I think if you go and read through the whole thing....you'll see that I NEVER did....and I even advised guys NOT to do it.
Is Prime perfect.....HELL NO...... Is ANY company that has more than one driver and 1 truck? Someone is always gonna be mad either about pay...or benefits....or the truck....etc. But, I'm not gonna bad mouth Prime....not about the way they've treated us. I might complain that they don't have a health insurance plan like some other companies that have O/O's and Lease/Ops.
RoachCoachDriver.....whoever your recruiter was needs to be punched in the mouth. That simple. Please don't talk like you type when you get on TV.....:36_1_37[1]: We already have a bad enough image!!! LOL

No, the part of woMAN that makes us emotion, cranky, and moody is the MAN. If there weren't men, we wouldn't have any reason to be moody. Now about that above quote of yours.......What year is this sir?!!! I'm not a feminist by any means, but I think it's safe to say women can benefit men more than that. If men would stop thinking like that and see the value a woman can bring life would be so much easier.......Oh, and as for the curves, that is just God's little bonus to you men, and a tool for us. You get out of line, we can "deny" access to those curves.........:plbbbb[1]:

Wow, the topic sure changed on this one!
I was wanting to log in and see if RoachCoachDriver was still talking here about his misfortunes at 'Slime' (I mean Prime!). Now I just finished reading a bunch of stuff that my wife has been trying to pound into my head for many years.
Hey Roach Coach Dude, I'm going to be bringing a permit load into Brooklyn next week and was wondering where the best hoagies are at.
I'm not quite sure if I can handle one of those million-mile burritos you have on board! Let's meet for lunch if we can.
And the last page and a half of drivel from Oversized Wife is pertnient to the owner-op how ???????:sleepy:

Why do you insist on calling me that? I posted photos so you can clearly see that I'm NOT oversized....not that it really matters to me what a gene pool reject such as yourself has to say or thinks.........:bite_me2:

I saw your pics and you're definitely not oversized. Not to sound mean or anything but that cigarette in your hand just isn't very 'cool'.

Sho thing. You can find them delicious hoagies right at the corner of 42nd st. You must be bringing one of them steel loads. Im sho you can handle my burritos. I'll put EXTRA hot salsa on it and if ya can't handle it they gotz plenty of portopotties nearby. The whole town of brooklyn stank anyways so you crapping all over tha place won't make no difference. Let me know when you make it up here and We'll go getz some oversize italian hoagies from my friend Don Corleone's pizza parlor. IF thatz dont fill you up you can try one of my SPECIALLY made burritos.:cook[1]:

Yes, I'm sorry to say that there are a few bad apples out there that give women in general a bad reputation. :23_32_7: :36_6_4[1]: :moodswings:
There is one thing I learned over the years that the old slive aying about women holds very true. You can't live wth them,OR without them. In other words, damn if you do and damn if you don't.:laugh1:

Quit in 06 and haven't lit up since. It CAN be done. The first few weeks I did a lot of gum chewing. Regular gum,not the nicotine gum.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind when I'm ready to quit. :36_7_11[1]:Awesome for you for quitting though!!! It's tough to do, and being a trucker I hear it's even harder. Being stuck in that truck for so many hours a day with nothing to do and fatigue wearing you down.....yuck. [smilie=real mad.gi:
