I have dealt with lumpers since day one
Some places you go have a formula for charges
Others the guy looks over his shoulder and gives an off the wall price.
I was in a place in Utica where they took the freight off, charged me $150
and said they would break it down "later" yea right
I ran into another place where they charged me 150 a straigth pull off
They peeled all the plastic and card board off..............
and threw it back in the truck and was told I had to take it back.
I had to slip the guy a 10.00 tip and he threw the junk it into another guys truck as it was leaving!
A ten buck tip and I just paid him150!
Walmart is real cute also.
You have to pay to get your truck unloaded ....period

It's not so much the lumpers I hate, it's the grocery warehouses themselves.
The warehouse in Fountain Colorado (across the road from that crappy truckstop on the west side of I-25) comes to mind as the worst one I've ever been to.
17 hours to unload and count 3200 cases of babyfood?!?!?!?!? :yikes: :wtf:
Needless to say, after spending 11 hours getting loaded at H.J. Heinz in Muscatine IA a day before, I was not a happy camper. I did manage to get paid some for detention time at both ends, but it wasn't enough for all the hassle and BS I was put through.
Those 2 places are #1 on my list of places to never go to again.

You can actually convince yourself(from the time you pick up, as you drive to the customer's gate) that somehow this trip to Food Lion will somehow be different, that they will unload you quickly and send you on your way. ..........
Then that food whse smell hits you like a punch in the face......
who was I kidding
I AM IN FREAKIN FOOD LION AAAGGGHHHH
The waiting can fool you too especially if you have a 6 am appt.
You tell yourself "there is no way possible that I will miss my pickup
I could be here til 3 pm and still make it..................
you know whats next...
you finally get a door at 2 pm

Maybe it is time to leave shaffer,Big Al.
What does Shaffer have to do with it? I blame those problems on the food warehouses themselves!
Anyone remember Fleming Foods? They were the WORST! Seeing them go "bye-bye" a few years ago made a lot of us want to throw a party in the street! :wow:

I used to go to a place in Ft Wayne (might have been a Fleming but not sure) that had a big sign on the wall that said something like:
If you choose to not hire the lumper service you have 30 minutes to have your load emptied and processed or you or your company will be charged $100 per hour until you leave.

Uturn....wasn't that a Super Valu DC? :noclue:
I remember delivering to a place near the truckstop (I-69 & US Hwy 30) that had a sign that said that.

Why would you even consider pulling a reefer unless you have a brand new PS3 and lots of new games.
One thing I've found pulling a skateboard.................most places want what you brought and want it bad enough to get it off the truck fast.
More than once I have had them take material off of my truck and load it directly onto another truck.
The only way I'll ever see another grocery warehouse is if its under construction and I'm delivering lumber to buld it with ;)

Nash-Finch still has a warehouse in Omaha- I just delivered there about 4 months ago. Hopefully never again.

We used to go to Jewel in Melrose Park all the time. They had lumpers, or you could use a junk electric walkie and unload yourself. The "regulars" could flip the Teamster a $20 and he would unload your trailer, and fast. Pretty funny to see the look on the other drivers face when they asked the forklift guy to pull a pallet off and was told they weren't allowed in outside carriers trailers.

I love going to Food Lion in Salibury, NC. I know some of the guys there and my first time there they told me it was going to be 4 hours. I said, "Fine by me, I'm on the clock."
I was out of there in and hour and a half. Still some cool guys that work there.
