I had several issue weapons.
M16a1
Submachine Gun, Cal. .45, M3/M3A1

The M3 was a blow back submachine fielded in December 1942. It could only be fired on fully-automatic. It used a .45 cal. cartridge in 30-round magazines. It's rate of fire was 350-450 spm.
M2 .50 Caliber [12.7mm] Machine Gun

The M2 .50 cal was issued to me because it was part of my issue equipment for the M-578, and later, the M-88a1 I was assigned.

M-16A2 for basic, M4 once in the force. the M4 is basically an updated version of the M-16 with a few nice additions(like the M-204 grenade launcher) :D

M-14A
Twice as heavy as the M-16 but more reliable and much better "knock-down" power. ;)

I was USAF so no rifle issued but still had to qualify. The first rifle was the old M-1 and then the M-16. I liked the M-16 better.

Thats how it was for us "airdales" in the Corp's as well.We did'nt have a weapon that was issued so to speak.
We had to qualify once a year and the occasional "junk on the bunk" IG inspection would warrant a trip over to the armory for a rifle.

I had to qualify with the M9 Semi-Auto pistol, M240 coaxial machine gun, M2 .50, and the 120mm main gun on the M1A1. I only shot the m-16 for familiarization.

M-16A1; M-1911A1; 81mm and 4.2" (107mm) mortars. I also got some time with the Grease Gun (M-3), the M-60 and of course the M-2 .50 cal.
Some foreign weapons I got to familiarize with on the range included the AKM, Ak-74 and FN-FAL. At one point I wound up carrying the FN-FAL for over a month at Wildflecken. I was happy to get my familiar old M-16 back though.
I was issued live ammo at a location other than a range (and various guard duties) only once: February 1985 in Germany. Several squads from throughout the battalion, including my mortar squad, got detailed to provide security for a microwave radio relay station in the hills of Bavaria. A similar site had been threatened by terrorists (this was about a year before the Berlin disco bombing) and consequently all such sites were provided with a platoon sized element of infantry.
The only good thing that came out of that bleak duty was meeting my (future) wife... she was one of the tech-rats (MOS 32D) operating the station. I went all the way to Germany to meet a Virginia girl, and over twenty years later I'm still guarding her. :)

1971, USAF Avaition Engineers, we were issued Colt 45s for duty issue, plus we had to qualify on M1A's.
We looked like a bunch of holdovers from WW2............ :wow:
Though one was not going to be doing much defensive fighting from the seat of a road grader...............
