We all know history does have a way of repeating itself.

How many of you think the presence of Unions may rise again in American workplaces?

I hope it happens, but what concerns me is the greediness of companies wanting that cheap Mexican labor these days.

Whether history repeats itself or not, I know for a fact that the unionized company that we did a lot of work for last year, doesn't have squat for work this year. 95% of the bids went to non-union companies.

The company we do a lot of work for is regulating their employees hours to 40 or just over 40......no more than 45 hours per week. :wow:

Last year, we were doing 70+ hours each week with this company. This year we haven't done hardly anything. :wtf:

Case in point, they lost a BIG 2.9 million dollar road construction contract in New Ulm by $2,900. :yikes: :wtf:

My personal income is down almost $8K for the same period last year. Last year I was 'begging' for a Saturday off. This year we've worked 3 Saturdays so far. :wtf: :wow:

BigDave..........

Results are the same in the Northeast for construction........2 of our union guys have stayed with us all season...no work or travel all week.....All of the state-bid and most of the private work is non union right now.....
We are making $$$..my 401 is steady and income might flatten but like you that is because of less Saturdays.......

My question to those OTRs and LTLs....How bad are Con-way and Yellow to work for......Their starting wage is decent and they are BEGGING for drivers in all of the Northestern states.......that is one strong ...non-union and one strong union shops.......

Even Fed-ex national is "Recruiting hard" for linehaulers.......

Snoope just wondering out loud......

It will be interesting to see how road construction plays out this year and beyond. In Washington there are a couple of projects that are started but only about 35% complete because the state ran out of funding. Now the Feds say that there is no money for state projects so find your own funding now............................

So the "toll" word is being tossed about here. It doesnt seem to matter whether you are a union or non union company anymore. With no funding and fuel hitting 4 bucks a gallon and oil at 106 a barrel there wont be much of anything being built in these parts anyways!!:hmph:

Asphalt work here in Eastern Wash. is predicted to be off by 60% this year because of high oil prices bringing alot of work to a halt.

Guess it will be chuck hole city from now on.............................:xbounce:

To answer your question Jeff I would say in some areas you will see a increase in labor agreements being signed, mainly because of the health and welfare plans that unions can offer, lifting the burden off the companies to shop for these plans for their workers......

I have seen in some areas a new direction of companies and unions actually coming together on pay, H&W plans, and work rules that benefit both sides and work out well.

Ups Freight (Overnite and Motor Cargo) and the Teamsters are one example.

I still think we are in for alot of the coolie companies wanting the cheap, under the table workforce that is out there from across the border though, and until we get a administration that is willing to stop the bleeding on the borders and lock them down it isnt going to change any time soon.........
