Well, you can sure tell it is summer time. I went to Fort Wayne to pick up ice cream Friday afternoon and there were 5 trucks sitting there that couldn't get pre-cooled to -10. Most were still above zero and holding. And a few would start getting close and defrost. Nothing like starting over. Looking at some of the trailers, I can see why, they were pretty ratty looking.

Pre-Cool in route! I turn put mine to the temp of my next pick up BEFORE I leave my last stop or pick-up. Save alot of time that way :D

Uhm, these guys had been there all day "pre-cooling". :yikes: Confusiou s say; When one has junk equipment, one has to sit all day. :)
I also pre-cool before I leave last stop, but when you have a good trailer and an SB400, it doesn't take too long to hit-20f, even at 100 degrees f ambient temp.

Maybe next time them or the company will buy better equipment :D . I wonder how many will see no money for sitting all day? :D

WSE has ratty trailers, but it seems like we got rid of most of them. I noticed with some that even if it is -10 it drops enroute and has a very hard time keeping a -degree.
I can't do nothing about it and so I do what I have to do.

A problem we used to have years ago is the meat packing plant would load fresh meat on our trailers before it was chilled, and expect the reefer unit to bring the temperature down almost immediately after it was loaded! :yikes: Some fail to understand that a reefer unit is designed to maintain the temperature of a product that is loaded in the trailer, as it is supposed to be loaded at the temperature they wanted it shipped at.
I saw what some of you were saying about some pretty ratty trailers out there! I know of an Owner-Operator here in Texas who used to buy a new truck every two years, but had a- get this- 1982 Great Dane 48' reefer trailer with an old, worn out TK Sentry 2000 unit that would barely run! :yikes: He did good to be able to pre-cool that thing down to freezing, let alone to zero or less! He kept using that same trailer until he "folded" in 2001 after not being able to get cargo insurance with that old trailer any more (he had lots of rejected load claims).

We haul alot of ice cream, so trailers get traded every 4 yrs. They also have been using the TK screw (rotary) compressors since they came out. WOW! Those things cool! And, knock on wood, no compressor failures. Also, they are much more fuel efficient.
If anyone is looking for a used TK screw comp., The original ones were SBIII SSR. (The second "S" designates screw comp.) The next were called MAGNUM, same thing, but in a Whisper housing. Now, they are called SB 400, which just came out a little over a year ago.

Exactly, when I ran the chill thrill  I always noted on the bill what the temp was of their product when they gave it to me, invest in a thermometer and just do your own checking. If you are loaded at 40 *, then all that product takes a heck of alot longer to freeze.
I never minded so much hauling cold stuff, just hated frozen stuff.
