For any and all Vets, as well us civlains, if you ever get the chance while in the San Diego area, make time to go visit the USS Midway.
A group of former crewmen and investors bought the ship( it had been planned to be turned into razor blades), brought it down from Bremerton, and have reopend it as a floating museum. It's operates on donations
I had a cousin serve on board from 81-85 while it was home ported in Japan. He'd write me letters teling me about the ship and how he wished i would be able to visit it.
During the tour, i was able to get to some of the plces he would write about.

Labor Day weekend, i was in the shop up in Onterio for the entire weekend, rented a car drove down, and toured the ship for most of the day.
Just amazing. I was blown away bit. Took many pictures, of which i'd be happy to share. Just ask

Nice pics, good job.

I took time in July to visit the Alabama in Mobile, quite impressive ships. Going by there again in the am but won't have time to stop this trip.

Years ago I was laid over one day at Wilmington, NC at the Pilot T/S I think it was just 1/2 mile from the USS North Carolina. When I arrived I was dog tired so thought I would sleep and the next day walk over and do the tour with my camera (35mm). Well the skys opened up with torrential rain, lightening and thunder so I never did get to do that tour and I regret that now that I am retired. Many years ago when our kids were young we did tour the HMCS Haida in Toronto Harbour which is a WW2 Tribal Class destroyer! It was worth it. The Haida is now up on a permanent concrete base now at Ontario Place on the waterfront. http://hmcshaida.ca/

I have also been on board the Mighty Mo. before she was refiitted. Actually twice i was able to go aboard. Once when i ws 4 or 5 with m parents, when we were visiting family in Bremerton,Wa, then again when i was 18, up visiting cousins.
At the time the Iowa and and i belive the Wisconson were also berthed next to the Mo, while in Bremerton, before the reto fit.

If any of you ever get to Charleston, SC, head out to Patriots Point. They have the destroyer Laffy(sp), a WWII submarine and the carrier Yorktown. You can tour all three and also catch the boat to Fort Sumter if you're into the civil war.

The Yorktown seemed huge to me so I can imagine how large the new carriers are.

I'll be in Charleston next September for a military reunion and I plan on visiting Patriots Point again.
