Case for Headache Racks.

Of course what we call a Headache Rack was originally called a "Bull Bar", and the hood over a cab, like on a dump bed was originally the "Headache Rack"... Like that matters now. This guy could have used either... <Note: this looks like it may have been a Photo Shoped Picture, None the less the point is still made about cab protection>

ATCO...great pic!!

I have always thought it looked like suicide to haul those long beams, pipes, etc. Even with a headache rack, most of them I see don't look like they would stop much. I'm afraid if I were hauling this type of freight, my truck would probably weigh 30,000lb....the headache rack would be 10k of that :)...joking of course. Solid steel 1" plate with lots of bracing ..lol. That should do it :).

Yeah I hauled 2 8" and one 6" XXH guage steel pipe (20') from LA to here in Bakersfield... The truck we use has to carry that length of pipe up over the body (It's a stakebed)... I used every strap I had, and they still managed to move when I had to hit the brakes. I finally fashioned 3 straps to tfront of each one and ran them back to the body, to prevent the foward motion (I figured I could limit the backward motion by nice and easy takeoffs)... It helped greatly, but I went ahead and waited till 7pm before leaving LA (Lessen the amount of traffic)... Despite the constant fear of the pipes going foward as I stopped, the trip wasn't too bad... I got a pic I can put up later. But I just got in as I am typing this at 1am PST... he he he took "another" break before hitting the hill, and didn't leave there until 11pm and with a new CB...

I've hauled pipe up to 48 inch diameter and 80 feet long and never lost a joiunt.

I can tell you that the fellow that had the joint thru the windshiled didn't have the pipe wedged by using chalk blocks and didn't bother with belly wrapping it either. And probably only used half the straps required.....probably just going a ....little ways....

Heck the pipe isn't even coated, if it had been it would still be going.

That is how easy it is to get killed by NOT securing properly. This driver was very lucky and so were the people around this load.
I have found that if using chain for pipe of all sizes that if you run the chain from the rear of the stake pocket and over the load it will not move forward as easy as the chain from the forward side of the pocket, and of course you can have 1 not enough but never too many securment devices.

I wonder how fast he was going to get that pipe to go that far after going through the rack and cab.?
