If you get up North you will see many multi-axle trailers! It is just that California has not built their roads to the standards required for our more economic transportation means and methods! here is an example:

Sorry to disappoint you, but both of these pictures are taken at Bowmanville, Ont., one hour East of Toronto! The white unit is Canadian, a W900B Kenworth with a Super B Train set of trailers, and the Red one is American from Michigan, with the extra axles they are allowed in that state. I am not sure of the Allowable Gross Vehicle Weights now that I have been retired 2 years, but if I recall correctly it is in the order of 158,000#. Will check on google for that. While Michigan and Quebec allow those extra mid trailer axles, they are not in Ontario and are supposed to be chained up while in the Province!
P.S. Found that Michigan has 160,000 to 164,000# rating but that is with the extra axles! They recently reduced their single trailer allowable from 9 to 8 axles and there was a corresponding reduction in gross weight. As soon as you exceed the 80,000# GVW in Michigan the weight per axle is lowered.

Awesome-looking trucks, accremonious! Yeah Cali's got laws restricting everything it seems. Max gross weight here is 80,000 pounds and no triples. And there are a lot of roads where the max lenght allowed between the kingpin and rear axle is 30 feet.

So 22 meters is about 71 1/2 feet. If I recall correctly we are allowed 75 foot or 23 meters. Just found my August 1989 Safety Guide. The maximum weight in Canada is 137, 786# or 53,500kg. for interprovincial hauling. Some provinces may have slightly higher maximums. Saskatchewan licenses Super Super B Trains (the pup trailer has a tridem axle combination, too).

:D my metric is terrible! The longest single trailer I've seen is 53 feet. In the California Commercial Drivers' handbook the max lenght for a double is 75 feet; the max lenght for a single truck is 40 feet bumper-to-bumper. The one in my sig is 32 feet overall; the bed is 24 feet.

the maximum weight in Germany is 40.000 kg,but Denmark is allowed to take 53.000 kg until the Border to Germany..
it is considered in Germany,to drive with a Giga-Liner,who can take 60.000 kg.

There are some states and provinces that permit 58' trailers. I know Montana is one and several of the others are near by. I talked with one driver that snuck a 58'er into Massachusetts on a long week-end and had to leave it for fear of getting caught. How his company got it back if they did we don't know!
These same states and provinces allow triples and turnpike doubles, and the so called Rocky Mountain Doubles. They have the wide open spaces, low populations, hence less dense traffic (pun intended)!
