Search for home for USS Iowa may be over

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) The search for a home for the USS Iowa may soon be over.

The Navy has declared that Mare Island off the coast of Vallejo, Calif., is the only practical option for the USS Iowa Memorial and Museum.

The Iowa was first launched in 1943 and made tours during World War II and the Korean War, earning 11 battle stars. It was decommissioned in 1990.

The Navy's announcement is good news to Merylin Wong and others with the Vallejo-based, nonprofit Historic Ships Memorial at Pacific Square.

Wong's organization has spent 10 years working to get the Iowa battleship. The bidding process, which took much of the past year, included presenting the Navy details about logistics, funding, dredging, pier improvements and ship restoration.

San Francisco and Stockton also sought to become the Iowa's permanent home.

The next step is for the nonprofit group to provide evidence of firm financing to the Navy, which will then further consider the application.

About $15 million to $20 million is needed to give the battleship a permanent home. Wong said her group is requesting donations.

The Mississippi has a channel depth requirement of 9'. Locks and dams are not deep enough or wide enough for the big battle wagon.

USS Iowa specs:
Length Overall Length: 888 ft
Waterline Length: 860 ft Beam Extreme Beam: 109 ft
Waterline Beam: 108 ft Draft Maximum Navigational Draft: 38 ft
Draft Limit: 37 ft

Info on Locks & Dams:
The majority of locks are 100 feet wide, wide enough for double-wide barges.http://www.twincitiestours.com/info_mississippi_river.html

I'm glad to see it going to Vallejo. The clowns in SF were tripping all over themselves trying to keep it out of there when it was first announced that SF was a pick for a permanent site.

The city fathers calimed that SF was a peace loving city and didnt want anything resembling a war memorial in there town.

How the Swordfish has stayed there this long is beyond me.............

I went eastbound across the Martinez bridge on I-680 a couple of weeks ago, and if you look toward the east, you will see the Reserve Fleet that is anchored in Suisun Bay.

They're about three miles from the bridge, and if you know what to look for, you can see the Iowa. A battleship has a very distinctive profile... :D

My oldest sons ex father in law was one of the captains on the Sea Victory tug boat that pulled the Missouri from Bremerton to Pearl Harbor.

He said that even with the Missouri almost 1/4 mile behind the tug it looked as though it was right on top of them while at sea!
