http://www.bigdogs.com/images/products/thumbnails/S2777th.gifThe Vick case broke in May of this year-I knew of his extensive involvement as early as March.
It was just a snippet of information that I stumbled across, somebody knew somebody who did some work out at the Vick place and saw something, they passed that along to the person they knew who passed it along to me.
I passed it along to someone else and forgot all about it-except I verfied it with another source I have and if this source says it, especially where animal welfare is concerned, I believe it.
I know where most of the dogs were housed, I know a lot of the people who cared for them. I also know that many of these animals had a bout with kennel cough which is not surprising since probably none of them had ever had a series of canine shots.
When the State Police went to Vicks home and the news of their discovery broke on the news, more than a few people looked at me with shock in their eyes, wondering how I had known months ago that this day was coming.
Many of those looked at me as if to ask, "Is he really guilty?"
My look back told them that yes, he certainly was.
This is exactly why I got quite a laugh out of Vick's initial denials and the "Oh, that wuz my family takin' advantage uh me an I ain't know nuffin' 'bout all dat".
I looked at the television and said "You lying sack of ****."
I will admit, I was frustrated as anyone when the Commonwealth Attorney for Surry was reluctant to bring charges against Vick and I personally believe that it was because of Vick's race-there was a MOUNTAIN of evidence there and even a paper-trail a child could have followed, and yet Poindexter himmed and hawwed-"Well, we cain't go rushin' tuh judgement, now can we, 'specially since it's all those white people comin' aftuh Michael Vick"
My next surprise was when the senior most member of the United States Sentate, Robert Byrd shouted "BARBARIC" at the CSPAN cameras when the federal charges came down, I knew that it was all but over, but the process had to run it's course.
One of the images that will forever stick in my mind is the scene of Vick, strutting through a casino being asked about the charges and responding only as an arrogant simpleton only could, "Well, it doan' mattuh whut happen 'cawse erey'body gunna still lub Michael Vick!"
God, PLEASE let their be a trial so the 12 people who matter-those in the jury box can feel the unmittigated hatred and contempt for this animal that I have come to have for him.
PeTA is good for a few things, and one of them happens to be their "mob on demand" complete with posters.
How embarrassed they must have been to find out that all of this was happening not 30 miles from their own headquarters!
On the day of Vick's arrainment, I thought it was funny the way he strutted into the court, head held high with his "Can't touch me 'cawse I'm Michael Vick!" attitude.
Just another gangstuh' with money, but a gangstuh' never the less.
I knew that he was a liar, I knew that he wasn't smart enough to see the impossible situation he was in and I was pretty sure that one of his "boys" would roll him over to save his own hide-thank you "Tony-T".
Tony Taylor was the first one to crack, then the rest of them went down one by one, each promising to testify against Vick-the end was at hand.
The next time I saw Michael Vick was when he went into court to change his plea from "not guilty" to "guilty".
Unlike the last visit to the Federal Courthouse, he wasn't quite so arrogant and didn't have his head held up so high.
The look on his face was more like, "Well, I has tuh go an see duh massuh' 'cawse he ain't too pleased whif me".
Beaten, humiliated and about to be laid prostrate before the court, this is exactly where people like Michael Vick deserve to be.
I was horrified to read the admission of facts that Vick signed-the henious, unspeakable cruelty that Vick and his "boys" inflicted on these animals for their own amusement spoke more to a serious flaw in their moral compass and I wonder if we could hang, drown or electrocute say professional football players who didn't measure up to our standards the way Vick and his friends did to these animals?
Why shouldn't we?
One things for sure, Vick's performance on the field hasn't been equal to the money he has been paid, much of which he may have to return to the Falcons.
The part that sickened me the most was the description of the "slamming" of the dogs on the ground to kill them.
Look, a Pit Bull is a tough animal and it would take slamming it into the ground several times in order to kill it and if you can do it once, then it's obvious to any idiot that you've had practice.
Do dogs deserve to be treated with such cruelty? My God, Vick would have come out better if they would have just put a bullet through these dogs heads and ended it quickly.
Here again, this speaks to a person who takes delight in causing needless suffering for their own personal amusement-which is one of the reasons I have no sympathy for him or any of the bad things that have befallen him.
If anyone deserves to suffer the misfortune, it's Michael Vick-he's earned it and in this I think the dogs have gotten justice.
From my point of view, shelters such as the one I work with have to deal with the mess that people like Vick create. We have to care for the dogs when they arrive at out shelter, our staff has to deal with some of these animals that are nothing short of psycotic or, so desperate for love and companionship it breaks your heart to know that someday soon, a Judge will sign an order telling us to destroy the animal.
All of this so some gangstuh' can "feel like a man" and strut around, grabbing his crotch because the "glory" of two dogs ripping each other to pieces is the only validation of their diminished manhood.
There are those who make the argument that "The dogs were Michael Vick's property and he has a right to do whatever he wants with them".
No, he doesn't.
If that theroy is true, than you should be able to crash your car with no recourse, should be able to live in a house that is falling apart with filth on the floors and never even cut the grass because it's your house.
Nope, we have STANDARDS in civilized society and the one thing you may not do is cause needless suffering of an animal, nor may you train it to be a vicious animal and as such, a danger to others in your community.
Worst of all, when these people want nothing more to do with the dogs, they drop them off at the animal shelter and let society deal with the problem they have caused-cleaning up the mess they have made of this animals life and many times, we have no choice but to euthanize the animal.
I am also getting a little tired of hearing about "Well, it's just because Vick is black is the reason they're coming down on him so hard, it's racisim".
As a member of the animal welfare community, we would have been howling for the hide of ANYONE who, in Vick's position would have been caught at this-black of white, we would't have cared-but the one thing we would NOT have done would have been to defend someone right up until their last lie simply because they were white as the black community defended Michael Vick because he is black.
Us white folk aren't ashamed about hanging one of our own out to dry and don't feel the need to "protect" or "support" any member of our "community" based on the color of thier skin-but that's just another of the double-standards we have in this society.
I happen to be well-aquainted with one of the rescue groups that is taking one of the "Vick dogs" and hoepfully, these folks can give this animal the chance that it never would have had were it not for the Virginia State Police stumbeling across the "Vick house of horrors" when they did.
Perhaps some of these animals will have a future in law enforcement sniffing bombs, perhaps some other useful purpose of maybe as a pet to someone who knows the dogs history and can guide it to a "normal" life.
From the accounts I have gotten, these dogs are "people friendly" but many are "animal aggressive".
The great part about it is, Vick is paying the bill for all of them-he made the mess, then he should pay the full retail cost to clean it up.
This is why I look forward to Monday, December 10th 2007 when prisoner Vick is taken from Northern Neck Federal Prison in Northern Neck, Virginia before a Federal Judge, who happens to have a little Bichon Frise that walks on the ground the Judge worships and is "drop-kicked" back into the Federal Prison for quite some time to come.
Mostly it is for the punishment Vick deserves for what he and his friends did, but there is yet another component to this saga:
As part of the plea agreement, Vick under the threat of more federal charges being brought against him must submit to debreifing and be prepared to testify against his "associates" in the underground world of dogfighting and will, like his friends, have to tell much to save his own hide and let me tell you what, the people Vick associated with are some very dangerous people.
Michael Vick might hope for a longer prison term if for no other reason than to be PROTECTED from those whom he will be force to give up.
Merry Christmas, Michael Vick-with any luck your new jail husband won't make you dress up like an elf.
