This holiday season take a moment to remember all of our troops that have fallen since the wars have started in Iraq and Afganistan..
33rd Fallen Soldier
KELOLAND soldiers have paid a huge price in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thirty-three to be exact have lost their lives in battle. We look back and remember a few who gave so much.
Tanner O'Leary is the second soldier from Eagle Butte to be killed in action.
The first was PFC Sheldon Hawk Eagle who died in 2003. Hawk Eagle was one of 17 soldiers killed in the crash of two Black Hawk helicopters in Mosul, Iraq.
Four other servicemen from KELOLAND were also killed that year. They include, Warrant Officer Hans Gukeisen of Lead, Private First Class Michael Deuel of Nemo, Chief Warrant Officer Scott Saboe of Willow Lake, and Captain Christopher Soelzer of Sturgis.
Roadside bombs became the weapon of choice for insurgents. Many from KELOLAND lost their lives in these types of attacks.
Specialist Michael Frank of Rapid City, Lance Corporal William Leusink of Sioux Center, IA , Army Specialist Patrick Herried of Sioux Falls, Corporal Brett Lundstrom of Black Hawk , Sergeant Jeremiah Boehmer of Parkston, Staff Sergeant Kevin Witte of Beardsley, MN.
Staff Sergeant Robb Rolfing of Sioux Falls, a member of the Army's elite green berets.
"Robb set an example for all of us. Mortally wounded, he continued to fight and do his duty maintaining composure and dignity throughout," said his unit commander during his memorial service.
Staff Sergeant Greg Wagner of Mitchell. Wagner grew up the youngest of 7 children. His mother always called him her PBB, precious baby boy.
"Each one was special in their own way, but Greg was my baby boy and I loved him much and I miss him," said a teary eyed Blondie Wagner.
Army Spc. Daniel Bartels of Huron, Chief Warrant Officer Paul Pillen of Keystone, Army Staff Sgt. Jason Montefering of Parkston, Private First Class Gunnar Becker of Forrestberg, Lance Corporal Joseph Welke of Rapid City, Lance Corporal Jeremy Bohlman of Sioux Falls, Sergaent Dennis Morgan of Valentine, NE.
The Yankton Army National Guard unit lost three of its soldiers in a roadside bomb attack. They include Specialist Allen Kokesh Jr. Sgt. 1st Class Richard Schild and Staff Sgt Daniel Cuka.
Staff Sgt. Cory Brooks of Philip, First Lietuenant Jason Timmerman of Cottonwood, MN , Staff Sergeant David Day of Morris, MN, Sergeant Jesse Lhotka of Appleton, MN, Staff Sergeant Brian Bland of Newcastle, WY, Corporal Nathan Schubert of Cherokee, Iowa, all died in war.
