View Full Version : I hate shopping for new clothes
Last night I went to get some new shorts and a few t-shirts.
I found ONE pair of shorts, and ONE t-shirt!
I tried on some button up shirts, really cute and only $5 a piece....
well, let's just say they didn't look very good on me. :(
I did also find 2 pair of capri's that looked cute on me... luckily I they don't look like jeans on me!
Guess I'll go again this weekend to find some more shorts and shirts.... I am really bummed about this!
Besides, all the really cute stuff is made for those who are pencil thin.... for some reason clothes manufacturers think that anyone bigger than a size 4 can only wear stuff with cute little puppies, huge ugly flowers or (UGH!) horizontal stripes!
Why oh why can't I just find some normal shirts without all this crap on them..... unless I look in the men's department?

Most of the styles are just knockoffs from the higher priced lines, so they were originally made too look good, hang or drape off of sticks in the first place.
I love clothes shopping, however in the past few years I've changed the way I shop. Instead of going to the dept. store to pay $20 for one pair of shorts, I go to the Goodwills located near the upscale neighborhoods. So I usually end up with four pair of shorts for 20. Actually more of a selection, I also shop the mens dept. there too for things like shorts.
Ended up one time with a Talbot's dress, price tage of $180 still on it, marked down to $15. It was yellow day in the store, dress was yellow and got if for something like seven or eight.
It works real well for the four year old, who outgrows stuff in months and only gets them dirty at daycare anyhow.
The Goodwills around here are pretty cool. The rich ladies in the BMW's and Mers. drop off stuff in the back, park and come in and shop. It's more like a recycle thing for them.

I've been noticing the same thing with clothes, and I think a lot of his has to do with the fact that they're being made in China and third-world countries. And you know those Chinese women are really small.
5 - 6 years ago, we could still get quality clothes if we were willing to pay a little more. But the material was better, the cut was better, they hung better on the body and they held up.
Now, even if we're willing to pay extra for higher quality, we don't get the quality. We just have to pay more. Several of us women were talking about this in the store a few months ago. We're really tired of this cheap quality clothing that we HAVE to buy because nothing else is available. We were ready to go outside and picket.
I have to try on a million items of clothing now before I find something that hangs right. I hate it.:noclue:

Beanie, I'm hardly well endowed, but I do know my way around Romans and Lane Bryant, both the stores and the catalogs. My mom was a 28 and I shop with my cousins and girlfriends that need nice stuff and not flowers and stripes.
Lane Bryant used to have nice stuff in the stores, now I think it's too young for even my tastes, unless you are looking in the catalogs. Actually around here in the big mall outlets (mostly ripoffs, but a few good stores), there are a few small shops (don't know the names offhand) that have some really nice stuff reasonable. Not high quality, but good enough for work wear.
Even Vanity Fair which used to have some qreat stuff has cheesy looking undergarments now. But I suppose it is the China syndrome. I remember when there used to be about fifteeen sewing factories in this area. I know of only one now. The older ladies in this town used to greet each other by saying "I remember you from such and such sewing factory". Not anymore though.
Well, it's to the point that I am looking for patterns to make my own stuff.
At least shirts.
My sister is a great seamstress, and she has taught me how to quilt and some other stuff. I know if I can find the right patterns, she'll help me put them together.
Now, I must say, I have found some shirts at WalMart that fit nicely and are solid colors... they are by "George". Also, the Faded Glory brand of shorts and capris fit me nicely. I just got 2 pair of capris last week and both were that brand. Seeing as I am very short.... I was surprised at how well they fit, even in the length.... they actually look like capris, not jeans!
I am also making some of Keely's clothes... she's almost 7 but is the size of a 4 yr old. I have a very hard time finding her (especially pants & shorts) that fit her waist and her length. I usually end up shopping in the toddler section for her, and try to find stuff that looks her age... hard to do at times.
I have some very cute patterns for her that I can customize to fit.... I think I may end up making clothes for both of us.

Actually,..I kinda like the flowers and stripes. I love Old Navy, but, JC Penny's, Sears, have the best sales, I've found.

So, what are we going to do about this. We're the consumers. We have some power. Every woman that I have talked with about this feels the same way. We're tired of crap.
I won't even buy a pocketbook in a store anymore. All of them - even designer one and Italian ones are made in China.
Do you know how many Chinese adults kids lose fingers making pocketbooks? I'm afraid I'll open a pocketbook and find a finger. In fact, I met someone whose job it is to go through purses before they go to the retail stores. She told me I wasn't far off in thinking I'd find a finger. She said she finds all kinds of things in these purses.
I've been using a hand-crafted purse for the last 2 years made by someone right here in PA.

ONE DAY CHINA SWALLOWS THE USA. AND WE HELPED THEM TO DO THAT
I have no idea what to do about it. Except as I said, make my own clothes.
However, I would probably find that the material is made in China too. ;(
