why are all your straps hooked to the rubrail instead of the main trailer ?
I thought that was a big DOT no no

I'll have to look that question up bikerboy. But I always hook my straps to the rubrail. I'll get back to you on this.

It appears the metal hook is on the outside of the rail. The DOT usually doesn't care about that. What they don't want to see is the canvas of the strap on the outside of the rail.

It has been a subject of some discussion but the last I heard it is a legal way to attach the hooks. It was thought that if you rubbed against something you could rip the straps all loose and loose the load.

The hooks are actually on the inside of the rail and the strap wraps around the rail with the part of the strap going over the load on the inside. I wrap them this way incase a strap breaks, from rubbing on something in the load or just wears out. (It happens) That way the metal hook should stay with the trailer until I can get stopped and not come flying off and hit a car or something.

Ya i guess that makes sense about not losing the hook if strap broke.
The last place i worked, mostly used chain hooks. So i always hooked around a pocket or hooked to the bed of the trailer.

Is it legal to just wrap a chain around the rubrail instead of around a pocket?

I usually don't take a chain outside the rub rail, I go between the rail and bed going around the round posts between the stakes. Less sharp corners.
