1) What if you carry a dog in your truck all the time - is the dog food and stuff you buy for that dog the time your out deductable?
2) What about books, CDs and DVDs bought or rented and not truck related while on down time but still away from home? Example - my husband had to sit and wait for a trailer to arrive and ended up sitting over 22 hours in the truck - just for entertainment?
There are so many questions about things being deductable and you read so many different responses on here it gets confusing sometimes. Cant there just be a list of what is and whats not? I guess that would make it to simple huh?

The short answer is no. In order to claim the dog and any of its expenses you would have to show proof that the dog has been specifically trained as a guard dog for the vehicle and cargo.

Not any more. Books, videos, etc have to be related and non-fictional to the industry in order to be claimed.

Another answer to your questions.
As far as dogs are concerned, I have had drivers who I do there returns for, when then send me a list of expenses, they include them in the list. but do not tell me, I know for a fact that they have a dog. but that is something that I really do not know about weather the cost of upkeep for a dog is included in the figures. I do not see the receipts.
Just a listing on expenses, I tell them that the Dog is not a deductible item.
The other items are all part of entertaining yourself while on the road, for weekend, and other layovers.
The IRS law specifies that your TV, DVD's, Audio Books, Movies, either purchasing or going to one, Museums, or any other are not deductible at all and never were.
The truth is none are not deductible, but there are too many that have taken the deduction and have not been audited for it.
If they did it correctly the actual deduction is only allowable at 50% not the full amount paid for the items, and would be put on Section V listing area on the Sch C stating on the line as follows,
Entertainment ($$$) subject to 50%= and enter that figure in the amount column.
There is posted by mare last year. it is the listing that I have available to all drivers free of charge. She just posted it for all to see.
