Does anyone know how to get a float unstuck in the gas tank of an older chevy pickup?

A good tap on the side of the carb with the handle of a hammer will sometimes free it up; then add a little Marvel Mistery Oil through the throat of the carb to give it some lubrication............

If that doesnt work go to the "BFH"..................

(These methods work for us Ford guys; I imagine the GMC boys (Jeff and Dave) will have better ideas for you Trish!!):D

don't listen to saddletramp, he is doesn't know his carb from a gas tank.[smilie=to funny.gi:

The only way I know is to pull the sending unit out of the tank, which usually requires dropping the tank itself.

Do you know for sure the float is stuck, or is the sending unit itself bad? Either way, it needs to come out.

Or it could be the dash gauge or wiring between the sending unit and the gauge.

Yeah GM vehicles have been known for guage shorting in fuel guages. My wifes pontiac is off, my mother in laws blazer is off, my chevy cargo van is off-- and I think even my buick wagon is off... other then that I dunno without taking it apart.

OK here's the deal. The pickup has 2 tanks on it. However, the left tank won't register over 3/8's of a tank when full, but it does go down, just not accurately. The gauge for the right tank won't register at all, and we can't get it to switch over from the left tank to draw gas out of it. The pump is working but for some reason, it won't draw up.

Any ideas?

Try cleaning all wiring connections and ground points. If that doesn't fix it, you need new sending units.

Also, if the switch won't transfer which tank it draws from, check for power at the switching valve. If there's power to that, replace the transfer valve.

Transfer switch/valve wires are cut/bad or
the unit itself is bad.

Seein as it will not draw or register is sayin to you it is not gettin juice to the unit which in case a faulty ground would/could mess up the other tank gauge as well as they are connected to the same gauge. Check all wires with a test light WITH IGNITION ON though!!

I would come fix it for FREE if you wear a skimpy little nighty and get rid of goffy for the night.:harhar::eek::harhar::eek:

One thing to remember on older vehicles when you're messing with wiring- especially if they've been in places up north where there's a lot of corrosive stuff used as de-icing agents- is the electrical ground points themselves need to be checked & cleaned every so often. These can be found just about anywhere- on both the frame & the body.

Other wiring contact points should also be cleaned, and then an anti-corrosive spray (like what's used for battery terminals) should be used to "coat" them.

Gee thanks ya'all!! Goofy can't do this kind of thing, and although the actual mechanical end of it, I'm fine with for the most part. HOWEVER, I do not understand wiring or anything electrical on a vehicle so now I'm really confused!

Which one of you with the good advice is coming to help me out?

:p:D:thinking:

Thanks for helping Trish out. I think you solved one of my problems too on my 72 cheby p/u. No reading on the gas gauge and I used to reground the grey wire. Now that doesn't work anymore. You guys solved that problem. When I get home I wll have a go at it.
I hate trying to drag the in cab gas tank out but this will be good time to go for an in frame tank now.
TKX

good luck trish.

OK Trish, I got it. You and Goofy jump in the truck and drive the 165 miles down to Blair and I'll fix it. Or, rather, I'll have the daughter's boyfriend fix it. Gotta get rent outta them somehow. Then, when he's done, I'll fire up the grill and we'll have some nice marinated flatiron steaks. With ALL the fixins.

I'll be home Saturday morning, so hurry up. Grill starts at 1800 Saturday night. Bring Big Dave and Rain with you, too. He only has to drive 134 miles to get to you guys. You know how he whines when he has to drive too far. Oh yeah, you've got a pickup. Hmmmmmm........I know, we'll call it a Nostalgia Ride and they'll just hop in the back and ride the 165 miles.

While Dave wouldn't need an INTERPRETER to go up there himself, he WOULD need to secure a U.S. Passport!:p
