As much as I enjoy taking a ride on my mountain bike to get some good exercise after being on the road all day there's often times when there's nowhere to ride nearby or it's too late in the evening to ride safely due to low visibility.
Not long ago I picked up a CycleOps trainer stand that allows me to ride my bike in a stationary position so that I can still get in at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of cardiovascular exercise a day (weather permitting, of course).
The stand folds close to flat and is stored on the top bunk of my Freightliner under my bike while it's strapped down.
While there's no way to measure distance I just go by time, and use a Polar heart rate monitor to make sure I'm pushing myself hard enough throughout the entire ride.

The rear tire rides up against an adjustable resistance roller and while riding you can increase or decrease resistance by just changing gears on the bike. The Mongoose bike shown in the photo is a 21-speed and that setup works very well for this.
