I'm 36 (as of yesterday), and I've been driving for a living for 9 years now. (why does this sound like semi-drivers anonymous?) I'm English, and live there.
I started out as an IT tech, but we got this van, and when the business wound up... well, someone had to pay the bills for it. I became a courier driver, and loved it. After 2 years, and 100,000 miles or so, I got a medium truck licence, (rules here say you have to work your way up, it's a pain in the *insert anatomical part here* and darned expensive).
I got the chance to drive up in ND on the harvest, and utterly loved being on the highway in a big truck. Way more than in England, tiny country, way too many people, all who are in a rush. After that, I went to Canada for 6 months, and drove semis into the US, but I was with a bad company, and it didn't work out in the end, so I came back.
I recently found the cash to get my semi licence here, and now have a job driving long haul across Germany, Holland, Belgium and England.
Boy would I love the rules to let me have a big US style sleeper, but length rules won't let me do it with a full length trailer. I spend about 6 weeks a time away from home.
I'd love to come back to the US or Canada some time, where at least you have a good chance of people speaking English.
