You have a large bathtub. The exact size, or the gallons it holds are not important. Let's just say it's big enough for an average sized guy to fit comfortably.

When you fill the tub up, it takes 6 minutes to be 100% full. When the tub is 100% full, and you open the drain, it takes 8 minutes to empty.

If you were to turn the water on, to fill the tub, but forgot to close the drain, how long would it take for the tub to become 100% full?

Since you're only netting 1/4 of the volume of water into the tub per minute, you have to multiply the minutes by 4 and equal 24 minutes?

Here's the answer to the quiz. May I take this moment to thank Gary, for showing me another way to figure this out. I will use his formula as well as my own to explain.


First, my way
If the tub takes 6 minutes to fill, you get 1/6 of it's volume each minute.
If it takes 8 minutes to empty, you lose 1/8 of it's volume each minute.

so, each minute, you get 1/6 minus 1/8 of it's volume in the tub
1/6-1/8=?

1/6 =8/48
1/8=6/48

8/48 - 6/48 = 2/48

2/48 = 1/24

so you get 1 24th of it's volume each minute, taking 24 minutes to fill.


Now, Gary looked at it a little different, but just as right as I did.

he figured that each minute, you lost 3/4 of what was put into the tub. So you only got 1/4 the regular volume in the tub each minute. Then, he multiplied the number of minutes it would normally take by 4. The same exact, correct answer, figured out a different way. Good going.

I hope this shows that you don't have to know everything to be smart, but rather be able to figure out how to arrive at an answer.
