"Make hay when the sun's shining".

Well, the same is very true in the construction world. Work like crazy and enjoy the occasional 'rain day', because eventually, winter rolls around and they either lay you off or send you on the road (where I work at).

Anyways, I had a call from one of our 'new guys' last night. He was whining about how he never sees his wife and kids because we're working quite a few hours each week. He also stated that he's gonna quit and find another job.

Now, he gets home every night except when we do short projects too far away to justify running the trucks back and forth every night.

Now, when my boss hires new guys to run a 'construction truck', they are told that they will be working long hours and such, so they know what to expect. If they agree to it, they're hired.

I asked this driver if he liked his paychecks. He said that he and his wife love the size of his paychecks since he started working here (last week he grossed right around $1400).

I told him to quit whining and suck it up. Save the bitching for winter when you're on the road, stuck somewhere for a day and not making near as much money. :D

Dave its the loss of the OT hours that has me looking for another job.........................5/14's suit me just fine.

Example ...................come in on Monday and get 7-10 stops in Austin(14 easy)..................Tuesday come in and get one stop across town..........come back to the yard and get sent home.............effectively killing the OT hours you would have gained from the day before

BigDave,

But try telling that to the folks who "milk" the clock during the "Season" and then find themselves home for 2-3 months during the winter.....
Our "short" weeks can be 45 hours BUT our average can be 52-55 without the Saturday....60+ with.......This time of year can get folks "nervous"..big jobs are on "punch list" stage and others are finished with the lowbedders doing upwards of 10-12 moves a day ( to be young again,NOT)....

We have 2 new jobs starting and a State job that will work until "they" say whoa......But guaranteed winter work in NH....no such "animal".......:duh2[1]:

Plan for the 42-48 strong weeks and ENJOY the 4-10 Slow ones.......:cook[1]:

What I find amusing is that the same ones who whine about the long summer hours are the first to whine when it slows down. In other words, they are never happy.

I loved rain days when i drove dumptrucks!

Actually the hours are the worst part of contruction, 8-10 hours a day is more then enough for me, and i can live on that just fine, and in winter i always find some work to do, like snowplowing, or anything really.

so if i could work 8-10 hours a day year round i would be happy.

theres more to life then money, and as long as i got enough to live on, i am happy.

life isn;t fun, when all thers time to do is sleep and work all week.

Now Bikerboy,

I disagree with the "rainy day" excuse.....Our dispatcher just puts us ALL together and we run Stone .........You want to here some serious crying......It is worse than listening to "Joe" ( just for you Capt.)......

Those that want to work and then those that HAVE to work can be seperated by their "Fiscal savy".........just like a 2 party system........:rofl2[1]::rofl2[1]:
