Too many people want the top shelf item, when a bargain item will do them just fine. Everybody I know who wants a dog or cat, starts checking out breeders. The better option, in my view, is checking out the local animal shelter.
I got my dog "Magnum" from an animal shelter in New Jersey. She cost me $35, instead of the $450 a breeder wanted for a dog just like her. Magnum is a good companian, and has a heart of a lion. She is very friendly with people when I tell her she is off duty, but will take on all threats when she is on duty. I never trained her to attack, but she knows when to hit someone. I can't tell you how secure I feel while sleeping in the Bronx, while Maggie is sitting in the driver's seat. Don't get me wrong, she is the guard, but we are a team. Her job is to slow any intruder down, so I have time to deal with them. The trade off to this is that if she gets hurt protecting me, money will be no object when paying for her emergency care. I am thankful every day that I have Magnum in my life, and it all started with a $35 purchase at the local animal shelter.

Adopted pets are wonderful!
We got our Bosco from a rescue place. He is the best dog we've ever had! He's a real part of the family.
It was $55 to adopt him which covered his nuetering and shots and a chip in case he gets lost.
Not bad at all, and he was well worth it and much more!
me mut didn't come from a shelter and if she did i woun't care cuz she is fun to have around

My cat, Miracle was found in the grass I was cutting on sunny afternoon. I thought at first it was a black rag and nearly ran over it.
She was minutes old and still slimey and the embilicle cord was still there.
The black lump moved and we have had her for in May 8 years. The mother cat never returned for her.
The vet across the alley said she would not survive 24 hrs. Made a latex nipple and fed her formula.
She was raised riding, first the pick up truck in a shoe box and then the big truck.
She is the BOSS in the truck.
She also knows the rules.
She knows to never go past the center post to the drivers side when she is on the dash if the truck is in motion.
Never to get in the drivers lap if the truck is in motion.
She knows never to go to the upper bunk for any reason.
She walks on a leash better than a lot of dogs,
She just won't ride in the back of my pick up and won't catch a frizbee. bummer
The one treat she demands is for us to bring her a cup of ice when we go inside . If we don't she pouts.
No walking in the rain or snow and no wiping of muddy little feet.
She has us well trained and spoiled.
We keep the litter box in the side box and she taps whom ever is driving on the elbow if she needs to go. She understands every thing we say and is all ears if it is about her.
Something we found out is, she can tell time, If she hears me say I need to be up at a certain time, she is within 15 mins of that time getting me up. Sometimes none to gentle.( need to trim her claws) Usually she licks my nose. That rough tongue is a real attention getter.
One of the nice things about the miracle is that, no barking if someone is walking past the truck at 4 in the am.
She has been known to hiss a time or two.
She knows she is loved. She loves us.

Wow Nitestar, that's really an amazin story! I once found some baby rabbits while mowing the lawn, momma rabbit didn't make it. I tried really hard to save the babies but wasn't able to. My youngest son was still pretty young back then and he worked so hard helping me with them! It really tore him up to loose those babies. Your story about Miracle reminded me of that. Glad yours turned out good!
I rescued my Pomeranian Nicky (AKA The Boss) from a woman whose kids nearly killed him. He was sooooo tiny, barely filled up the palm of my hand and I have small hands! Anyway, this woman had paid 500.00 for him from a breeder, but her kids were little and she wasn't able to teach them for whatever reason. She gave him to me because she was really afraid for his life. To this day he's terrified around children and I've had him since he was 7 weeks old.
I'd never had a small dog before and I was afraid he'd get stepped on if he was allowed to roam around on the floor, so he spent most of his puppyhood in my pocket. By golly he still expects me to carry him everywhere... and I do.

Even a purebred dog or cat can be adopted.
There are special "resuce" groups for selectbreeds.
Many have a adoption fee, but it is min. Some have no fee if you will take a older or special needs pet.
Our new dog Otis was free. A AKC reg 2 year old english bull dog that is a stud breeder.
He has a injury tht can go untreated, but we are going to have it treated.

We adopted a English bull dog last Sat.
This Wednesday the dog had to have surgery for ACL. Basic torn ligament.
Sound easy. We go into the vet to have the dog examined and told them he has been limping due to being guided with a brook from other owners.
They do a x ray. Call the cops. We get a police report made OUT ON US.
Do goes infor surgery. 1k was the cost. I paid the extra 35 to have him micro chipped.
Now 12 weeks of physical therapy and 2 vet visits a week for the nest 4 months.
Over all the dog is much happier. He even like you to put on the muzzle before you do the therapy. He has a big azz mouth and know it. It muzzle on. No problems, with out it he wants to attack. He knows when he has it on he is being helped.
Just blows my mind 1k for a simple leg surgery. Took 3 hours. For a great dog.
He is AKC and was a stud dog from a Chicago breeder. He comes from great lines. His price would have been 3800 but he was mean. He bit. I would bit as well if I had a screwed up leg from a broom.
Talk about a great dog. He is so sweet.

My oldest cat was the runt of the litter, given away by the owners. 8 years later on, she's still with us, and a great cat. If I ever had to get another one, I'd get a rescue cat.
