What is happening with the split with the AFL-CIO ?

I have heard on the news about the Teamsters and another union dropping out of the AFL-CIO.

What is going on with this and how is it going to affect unions in general?

Been a long time since I was in or around a union.

In my opinion the Teamster leaving the AFL is a good thing for the membership.Teamsters were seperate from the AFL for many years and during that time there was alot of organizing and membership building. To me, having another level of oversight did nothing for our membership, just added to the amount of restrictions that were placed on our ablility to serve the membership best.
Besides, the AFL has become nothing but a political hack, chasing the favors of the Politicians and forgetting who they are supposed to represent, the American worker.

The SEIU, UFCW, and others have felt the same way and now are charting their own course now also and feel their futures are better without the AFL-CIO.
