View Full Version : Backing into a hole. "See Side" vs. "Blind Si

When you are backing into a hole at the truckstop, or anywhere else for that matter, always do a "see side" jack when it is at all possible. If you come into a parking lot, and the only hole is on your right side, go to the end of the lot and turn around. It will take a few minutes, but make your whole life easier.
I have been driving for 15 years, and will **NEVER** do a blind side jack when it can be avoided. If someone brags about being able to do a blind side just as well as a see side, they are a liar. Maybe they can do it OK, but it is absolutely impossible to see what you are doing well enough while doing a blind side.(Gee, I don't know...but maybe thats why they call it a stinking blind side!!)
I have met a lot of truckers who can drive like pros, and they still do a see side every time. If you are a newbie, and think you know more than me and these other drivers, hang up your keys now, and walk away from thrucking. You will be better off in the long run.
Remember one thing. Accidents will happen. They can catch you when you least expect them. Things that happen, when they could have been avoided, are not accidents. They are bad choices. Don't make bad choices when driving if you can help it.

I've done blindsides but at least my KW had remore controlled mirrors on both sides. Also extension mirrors for wide loads.
Even with remotes it's still VERY SLOW backing as the mirrors can trick you pretty fast.

I tried adjusting my mirrors once for a blindside and the old head that was teaching me to drive freaked out. He was one of those; "once you get your mirrors where you want them, you don't touch them again except to clean them" kind of guys.

That's basically the approach I take when backing. I have remote mirrors on the right side, but hate moving them because it seems that I can never get them back 'right where they need to be'. :wtf:
I've gone 'around the block' 8 miles before to avoid blindsiding into a hole.
Doing so, also keeps my blood pressure down a bit. ;)

Well, what I didn't tell you, is that he slapped my hand when I reached for the mirror toggles and chewed on me a bit. Much like a puppy, I remember having my hand slapped and still catch myself to this day, pulling my hand back before adjusting the mirrors!!!!

Ya shoulda been around when I taught my wife how to drive a clutch. :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:
A 'military' belt (for BDU's) and a 4 wheel drive with the front drive shaft removed works well. :D
Belt around her left ankle and the other end in my hand. If she started to ride the clutch, I jerked her foot off the pedal. :yikes: :D
Kinda hard to ride the clutch in Low Range. :p

I used to be pretty good about blind side backing but I was a local driver and had to back 40 times or more a day so I got lots of practice in backing.
But as time went on I realized it was not as safe as it was bragging. So I gradually reduced my blind side show off backing.
I will however today, walk over to a trucker that has used the GOAL system and let them know that they did it right and to thank whomever taught them to do it.
I got lots of helper experence at the J in Tacoma last week.
some of these go ahead drivers and ( there ar lots of them ) NEED help and I have no problem assisting them if they don't mind.
I had one guy tell me to mind my own business and I did.
Then I let the other driver know who hit his truck.
These 53 footers can be a real booger to get in a hole with that school bus overhang.
I think that assisting or helping a fellow driver is the way it should be and it helps to cut down on Daves fender replacement and repair and helps keep his insurance rates down. ( Couldn't resist Dave.)
