While leaving Port Fourchon La. going to an offshore drilling rig I saw this workboat tied up to the dock. This is the first that I had heard of it. Check out the name of the boat and follow the link to read the story. The boat belongs to Tidewater Inc.

Pat Tillman was a true hero. I'm sure he could have stayed home somehow and played football.

I'm not denigrating Tillman at all in this post, I want to make that clear up front. He was an American hero, and what he gave up to fight for his country is certainly noteworthy.

Having said that, wasn't the media coverage of his death absolutely sickening? Someone here posted, just the other day, a letter from a U.S. solder complaining about the media saturation surrounding Michael Jackson's death. While I agree wholeheartedly with that solider, wasn't the same thing done with Tillman? The media went on for weeks and weeks about him.

The same day Tillman was killed, there were three U.S. Marines who were killed in roadside bomb attack in Iraq. Why didn't THEY get weeks of media coverage? Because they "didn't matter", they "weren't famous", they didn't "give up anything" to get there? Bullsh!t. We have NO IDEA what those three Marines gave up, what their hopes and dreams were, what they put aside to fight for the country. They died the same day, and they didn't get weeks and weeks of media coverage -- we don't even know their names. This lack of respect for them and all of the showering of affection on Tillman truly sickens me.

Again, to be clear, I am *not* denigrating Tillman. I am denigrating the media, which focuses on celebrities, be they Tillman...or Michael Jackson. Those three Marines weren't "celeb" enough to be recognized. Disgusting, isn't it?

Tillman would have been nothing more than a blurb on the news for a couple of days if the controversy over how he died had not surfaced. It was this that kept his name plastered all over the news for weeks more so than his "celebrity" status would have alone.

The same goes with Jackson. Much of the attention over his death would be gone by now if it wasn't for the controversy.

Perhaps. But my point is that we should recognize ALL of our soldiers who die...like those three Marines, and the media should go on for weeks and weeks about them, their dreams, etc. They are ALL true heroes, not just the ones the media chooses to focus on.

Well said Doc. Each service man/woman's life has meaning and all losses are felt deeply by those that care.

I have been there three times. Each time, I have been moved almost to tears.
