One of the oldest operating union carriers in this country, United Parcel Service, turns 98 years old this month. Ups has had a labor agreement with the Teamsters Union since the late 1920's.
From UPS's earliest beginnings, when Jim Casey started American Messenger Service below a Seattle sidewalk in 1907, to the role that it plays in synchronizing commerce all over the world today, UPS has provided unique one to one service to its customers.
Here is a timeline of UPS's growth:
August 28 1907: Jim Casey and Claude Ryan start American Messenger Service in Seattle.
1919:AMS expands to Oakland Cal, and changes the name to United Parcel Service. By 1924, UPS's service reach expanded to other major cities on the West Coast.
1929: UPS starts the first air freight carrier, United Air Express, providing package delivery via airplanes to and from major West Coast cities and as far inland as El Paso Texas, with service continuing to today around the world.
1930: UPS expand in to the East Coast, offering consolidated deliveries in New York City. During the 30's and 40's, UPS took over the furniture delivery services of many big city department stores, offering this service well into the 1970's.
1950's: The retail contract service was becoming limited and UPS began lookin for new opportunities to grow its business. UPS applied for and gained common carrier rights to all 50 states, even with the strong objections from the US Postal Service.
1970's: UPS expands into Canada and Germany, and by the 1980's, had expanded into over 200 countries and territories around the globe.
