Shippers concerned about potential labor unrest are warily watching a historic union split.
Union officials say –and many shippers believe–the International Brotherhood of Teamsters move last month to sever ties with the AFL-CIO will be transparent to shippers.
However, the internal turmoil in the unionized world has caught shippers’ attention–especially as the Teamsters promise a new organizing campaign against Overnite Transportation and other truckers.
“At this point, we’ll have to see what happens in the upcoming individual rounds of negotiation,” National Industrial Transportation League Executive Vice President Peter Gatti said. “There’s been a great deal of pressure placed on the unions in recent years.”
