Have you counted out the running costs for your truck for a longer time?
This is just an example question:(Has nothing to do with reality, just an example):
What would be the cost /mile if I would buy a brand new truck and drive it to the first Engine/Tranny/Rearend Overhaul/replacement? Including all the costs along the way like tires, brakes, maintenance, Oil/Lube/Filter and you name it.
I donīt need an exact cost, just something that gives me a direction.
And yes include the Engine/Tranny/Rearend Overhaul/replacement in the price.
If you could give me some numbers then I can count it out myself. :wtf:

Figure $5000 to $7000 per year for repairs and routine maintenance, unless something major breaks.
include the Engine/Tranny/Rearend Overhaul/replacement in the price.
Engine overhaul-inframe: $7000 to $18,000 (examples are minimum & maximum)
Transmission, 18 speed: $8000 to $10,000 (factory new)
Rears: $4000 to $6,500 (Reman)
One thing to keep in mind when repairing major components of a truck. Don't do it half assed! Fix it correctly the first time. Besides, if you just replace the worn or broken parts, what's gonna happen in 2 months when something else in that assembly breaks? :wtf:
A good example of this would be the thread titled, "Stuck in Elko". (http://www.truckstopusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2389)
By replacing with a factory reman or doing a 100% overhaul, you at least get a warranty on the entire motor, tranny or rears........not just warranty on individual parts. This way, you only pay for labor once......at least until the warranty runs out.

Thanx Big Dave,
One more question:
How many miles does an OTR driver drive on an average per year? And how many miles can you expect to drive with a truck before the first Engine/Tranny/Rear change?
Oops, that was two questions :wtf:

First question... Over the last 10 years, my avg is just over $7k per year for all maintenance, including major stuff, tires and pms.
Second question... Too many variables, we generally run less than 75k, but plenty run 150k+
Third question... Variables again... but my last 3 trucks...
1. Engine, past 1 mil, no major work, just maintenance Tranny, 850k lost clutch, went ahead and changed tranny Rears, past 1 mil 400b Cat/15spd/3:55
2. Engine, past 1 mil, no major work, just maintenance Tranny, past 1 mil... Rears, past 1 mil 425c Cat/15spd/3:70
3. Engine, currently past 1 mil, inframed due to bad head at 750k (lost 1st head at 450k) Tranny, past 1 mil Rears, past 1 mil 550e Cat/18sp/3:55

How many miles does an OTR driver drive on an average per year?
Most I've done is right at 127,000
Last 2 years, right at 112,000
This year, maybe 75,000.......so far
And how many miles can you expect to drive with a truck before the first Engine/Tranny/Rear change?
One of the companies I was leased to, the owner had it 'down pat' as to when to replace major components (if they hadn't been replaced or overhauled due to failure by then).
Motor; 1 million miles
Transmission; 1.4 million miles
Rears; 1.5 million miles
On my truck, I had the motor inframed at 884,xxx miles due to liner O-ring failure. Roughly 650,xxx miles later, something let loose in the motor and filled the oil filter full of metal shavings. Last oil sample revealed nothing out of the ordinary. :wtf:
Sale pending.

I've got mine on a figure of .65cpm right now but am planning real soon to raise that up to $1.00 pm. This will cover all ALL costs for truck and not have to worry when or if it breaks that there is no cash on hand.
I just hope this is going to be enough the way fuel is going up now.

So $.65 includes fuel and EVERYTHING?(With todays fuel prices)?

it has been @.65cpm for some time now but i said raised it .
fuel is up around .50 cpm and cost per mile is .14 - .17cpm so like I said I need to raise it.
I just spent a few bucks this month on engine problems but still have close to $17,000.00 in the truck bank acct. for Whatever.
My general rule has always been 1/3 1/3 1/3 split with the money generated. I am changing that starting Sept. 1st this way
$1.00 pm to the truck acct.
$1.00 cpm to my personnal acct. (this is my paycheck)
$.65 cpm to the buisiness (which is mine I own.)
This is how I run my program to make money. It works for me and that is all I care about it working for. The reason I am not doing my 1/3 rd split anymore is simple, I pay myself what I pay the truck. Have always paid myself this and will park the F'ing truck if it makes more than me.
Only you can decide what is best for you.

Use an Average of around 120,000 miles per year , your per mile costs vary over the life of a truck , on a new truck 3rd / 5th year costs more also what you pull and where you pull it makes a difference in your per mile costs.
