Anybody here use a router for multiple computers at home?

We just added a router because my son bought a computer and set it up in his room, now the daughter wants to use my laptop all the time. :wtf:

When using wireless on the laptop, it seems that I can't do windows upgrades & live updates to my anti-virus. Do you have this problem also?

We have a linksys wireless broadband router and I use it when I am home to run all my updates on the laptop. Never had any problems.

Yeah, we have the Linksys WRT54G router.

I do remember a few weeks ago, I couldn't do a windows update on the road unless I was hooked up inside a Flying J. Never had to do that before. :wtf:

Any ideas as to what the deal is?

It could be your wireless card on your laptop or it could be simply too much traffic on the router. I know things run real slow here if all 3 puters are using the net at the same time.

it could be the router itself. We use D-Link and I have no problems in getting updates for Windows and antivirus.

I used to have one for my daughter's puter until she got married in May. Now it's sitting in my closet. I never had any problems with it.

Router are great and add a layer of protection to your system by having a built in (limited) firewall.
You should be able to do updates, or anything else you can with a wire pc on the wireless portion. Perhaps you have a security setting wrong.

I would suggest that you use the WEP (or WAP) encryption with your router. I would also suggest using the MAC filtering available with your router. I would make sure each computer on the LAN also has a functioning firewall and updated anti virus application. Both the firewall and AV programs can be downloaded in free versions, shareware versions, and pay versions from the web.

I use Net Gear for my wireless routerat home.
I found through the process of elimanation that some times it eill block some down loads or sites. We jsut reset the parameters and it doe just fine now.
I also use a wireless D-Link router to set up usage for both laptops in a motel room.

So, wireless from the laptop to the router is problematic?
Can you connect the laptop by wire to a port on the router?
If so, does that work OK?

If it does, then you may have a setting in your laptop firewall config that is blocking your laptop from being seen by the router as a trusted computer, or the router is not configged to see it as trusted. Not sure which, but either would cause the problem when the site you go to trys to look at the laptop to determine authentication or to see sys config for an update signature.
