Saddletramp...
I noticed in the Katrina thread about Martrac...

I know this is a part of UPS Logistics, but what does the company do, how does UPS use it? I've seen those things moving by rail all the time...

(In case someone wonders why this is in the reefer forum - to the best of my knowledge, all Martrac's are reefers...)

Atco, the typical uses for the Martrac trailers is to load them westbound from Chicago with freight destined for the west coast; either terminating in Sacramento or Spokane, then reloading them with produce eastbound to the midwest. Apples from Washington, or garbage loads (general produce) out of central California.

Ups will farm them out for disaster use for the Red Cross as food and perishable storage, or like in the case of New Orleans, and after 911 many saw them on TV being used in downtown New York as portable morgues.
