What are some things that you should check into before going?
What plans should one make in the move also?

I'll be researching schools, churches, and a place to live.

Also, Is it better/easier to find a place and move into it before bringing the kids (they could stay with a trusted relative), or is it better/easier to move them at the same time?

There is no real textbook for moving. And alot depends on where you are going. Same goes for taking the kids with you. If you are moving to a small town, a good distance from a metro area, you'd probably feel better, and be able to manage things with the kids with you, with no problem. If you are going to a Metro area, or are doing it on a shoestring, then you probably will want to bring the kids later. Another thing to think about, is how dependable is what you will be driving. And when making the trip with the kids, depending on their ages, be sure to allow plenty of time, and plan on a motel room EVERY nite. It is amazing, how much easier a trip is on kids, when they get a good nites sleep and a bath each nite. And when the trip is easier on them, its easier on you. Plan on, ideally, 1 stop each day, to see something interesting(museum, landmark, & such). It gives the kids something to look forward to each day.It would take a little research, to find something in the right area each day, but, it will be time well spent. In other words, when taking the kids, make the trip itself, something to look forward to, and not something to dread. Moving a long distance with kids, just is not something to do on the cheap. If you do, it will be a bad memory. The idea is to make it an exciting experience, that they will remember as almost like a vacation. Then you will look back on it, and say remember when we did this or that, instead of something that you never want to go through again.

Good ideas there HillBilly.

Most of the move will be made in a truck... and no, the kids won't be in it.

Our basic plan is to let my husband go first, adn start driving. I'll go with him in the truck a few times so we can look at some places, unless his Dad finds a place first.

It's going to be over a period of months so we can be sure to find a good place.

When I was in the army, our stateside moves were made as a family. The only part that sucked was that we didn't really have time to research an area (town) to live in before we got there.

We stayed in a motel for 2 weeks when I got stationed in TX.

We stayed with a friend (now former friend) for a bit when I was stationed in KY.

If we ever move again, it would be easy because our kids are grown. Only our daughter is at home now and she's 17.

OH, Rain...Honey..Sweetie Pie! If you're reading this...WE ARE NOT MOVING!!! I like it out at the 'Redneck Ranch'.

Yep, but NEVER had one in or close to my house. We were driving around the empty 'spendy' houses. Seen it on the road. YUK!

The only things I really didn't like down south were those 'FIRE ANTS'. :yikes:
Dang things hurt for such a small critter. :eyes:

All in all..... TEXAS is  !

Just needed to learn what was poisonous and what wasn't. ;)
