Are you running synthetic oil and if so why? I've head most of the compelling reasons like runs cooler, better lubrication, no dry starts etc......
Had a friend try it for the first time on an older truck, and it's begun to leak oil. Nothing really massive, but leaking now that he running synthetic. He thinks synthetic is to slippery and therefore leaks on an older, higher mile truck / engine.

I run the Shell also. But you can tell from my various posts in the technical forum that I'm open to new ideas.

I use Shell Rotella 15W40.
What I've heard now...............is that if;
You use synthetic in a motor that is 'old' (like yours and mine), it'll develope leaks because the synthetic oil will seep past the seals and gaskets.
You use synthetic oil after the first 50K miles (new motor), it'll be fine.
Whether that is true or not, I have no idea.
I do know however, that you don't use synthetic oil in a brand spankin new motor (rebuilt or new). Something about it being too slippery for it to adhere to bearing surfaces and cylinder walls properly.

I have no experience with synthetic oil, but I knew a guy who used it once, and he could not have been happier.
He bought a brand new Volvo, and had a person from AmsOil meet with him right at the dealer. They put some kind of "Break in oil" in, and told him to run it for a week or so. After that week, he went to the AmsOil dealer, and they flushed out the engine several times, then put the AmsOil in. The total cost for the service, and the AmsOil itself was something like $1,000.
From that day on, he did not do oil changes. He simply took a sample of his oil every 10,000 miles, and mailed it off to the AmsOil dealer. At the same time, he had to put a new filter in, and add a little AmsOil to bring his level back up, which cost about $30 or so.
A few days later, he got an E-mail listing all the facts about his oil condition, and what it meant. He would be notified when he needed to change the AmsOil.
He didn't end up doing a change for about 150,000 miles, which cost less than the first time, since they didn't need to flush the motor as much. Now the way I was running my truck, I would have done about 15 oil changes in that amount of time, at about $135 each. Since he was spending about $30 each time on filters only, I was spending $100 more each time, costing me $1,500 more. Then He did the change for $500 or so, leaving him about $1,000 ahead of me, and having less engine wear on his motor.
This all took place a long time ago, but I still hear from many happy AmsOil customers. I am in no way, shape, or form involved with the AmsOil company, and have never used the product myself, but am telling you what I am very close to certain, know to be true.
If you have a different angle on this, please let me know. I want to be well informed.

Well, I think I'll put this nonsense behind and dance with the one that brung me.............................Shell.
Gosh, all it took was me getting a recommendation of changing oil at 10K, and I start thinking I'm not doing something right. When in fact, I'm am and have been doing things right regarding oil.

I quit using Shell rotella 15 40. I found at it starts to break down ( begining to need changing) about 3 to 4 thousand miles sooner than Mobile Delvac 15-40 does and so I use Mobile now. My samples are better too.
But I am happy with it.
But I am more inclined to put on the GCF filter system.
I shall not go into the whys and wherefores of the GFC. I just am leaning towords that no oil change just filters thing..

put Moble Delvac 15-40 and the next oil change i did on my s-10 it came out slow as malasses in january and after it got out the oil was broken down and not doing the job it needed to do
but the bottom line is all oil will brake down i have used chevron 15-40 not bad for a gas engine but shell rotela is by far the best
I use synthetic in my trans, and my rears....I use Citgo 15/40 in my engine, which I change every 10-12 thousand miles.

My previous truck had Synthetic in it since around the time it was new, and knowing that, i continued using the Mobil Delvac 1 Synthetic.
When I traded that truck in at 770,000 miles, it was using oil, had blowby, and showed it was pretty close to needing an inframe (Detroit S60).
The truck I own now has had Mobil Delvac 1300 (non-synthetic) since new. The engine (also a Detroit) is still very tight at 952,000 miles (uses no oil between changes, and almost no blowby at all).
Synthetics in a transmission and the rear ends is fine, as they're not exposed to the same conditions (fuel dilution, soot, coolant dilution) as engines are.
Since most trucks need the chassis to be greased every 10- 15K, why not go ahead and give the engine an oil change? Clean oil is the key to engine longevity, as many of us with older trucks want to keep them on the road awhile after we pay them off.
I'm at a point now that I would prefer to never buy a used truck that had synthetic oil in the engine.
Wal-Mart had been using synthetic engine oil in their trucks for awhile, and then went back to the regular oil after some engine problems developed.

I use the synthetic lube in my tranny and rear axle as it is required for the 750k mile warranty purposes from Meritor.
But for the Detroit engine? It's Rotella, dropped along with filters every 13k miles. No compromises here. Don't chance believing these jerks or any advertising telling you you'll get 100k off a pan of synthetic. Total farse that is not worth trying.

I use Mobil Delvac in the engine with 1 gal of Lucas oil stabilizer. Gives me less leaks, Higher oil pressure, by 10lbs, and quieter operation. (N14 Plus) I do use synthetic in the trans & rears. The Delvac runs about 5lbs higher perssure than Rotella, and it goes up another 5lbs when you add the Lucas. Oil use, between oil changes drops by about 40% with the Lucas, too.. But, most impotantly, it prevents breakdown. I still change @ 20,000mi, but, if you have to delay your oil change, you can go another 5 or 10,000 without much worry. Like most of you, I also use the Delvac in my vehicles at home, as it
