I am considering installing the GFC system on my Detroit.
All the special oil filter companies say the same thing about special filters keeping the oil clean and reducing the need for so many oil changes.
Mathematically it is sound.

Do any of you have a GFC oil filtering system on your truck and do you actually save money.
Does it work?
Is it hype or just a good sound system.

I am getting tired of being charged through the nose for required maintanance.

$ 20 dollars increase in having my ususual service due to the cost increase in oil and filters and stuff.

Time to get serious about saving money where ever.

thanks for your input.

My problem with making oil change intervals longer is that most companies & individuals will then make their PM intervals longer also. The key to saving maintenance costs is to repair small problems before they become big problems.I worked for a leasing company that orginally had their PM's @ 8000 miles.Over the years that interval was increased to 24,000 miles.Guess what happened?Their trucks turned to junk.I now do work for this company as a vendor.I have seen more problems from lack of PM & repairs than I want to mention.

Extending oil change intervals beyond the manufacturer's suggested intervals is NOT a good idea. Oil samples need to be taken often to catch external contamination (fuel dilution, colant dilution) before it does damage to the engine's lower end and valvetrain.

As it is now, the intervals they have are for engines with minimal idle time.

I ran Mobil Delvac 1300 in my Detroit, and changed it at 15,000. Samples looked great, even at close to 1,000,000 miles on the engine.

External oil filters are usually not a good idea, as the lines going to & from it & the engine can break, leaving you stuck. The possibility of oil leaks isn't to god where the D.O.T. is concerned either.

I do my oil samples at every oil change and so far they are good. As close to 15 thousand as I can and seldom over. I try to lube at about 5 thousand and I do any trailer I am pulling at the same time.
I have now on my engine 991990 miles.

Shell and Mobile both say that the oil does not wear out but just gets contaminated and needs changed. That is why I was considering the GFC filter systems. Keep the oil clean.
Still thinking about it.

Nitestar, even the best oil filters will not keep oil clean for much more than 15K.

Changing the engine oil as per recommended intervals is the best way to prolong engine life and keep sludge from forming in the oil pan.

To each their own, but personally I would NOT recommend it.

Better yet, go ask a Service Manager at a reputable Detroit engine dealer what his thoughts are about it.

I did ask a shop foreman and he said if he bought a truck he would do 2 things to it.
First would be put a spinner filter on it like spinner II

Second would be the Pittsburgh Power box.
He said that it does void a warranty but if you know how to use the right foot you should have no problems.

So I think the Spinner II will be it.
It takes up less room too. shorter hoses less chaffing potential. Less grand claims.

Of course he was not the only one to mention the Spinner II.
He said it was the best at removing soot from the oil and soot was the number one killer of bearings and internal parts.

I had a spinner on my 68 Pete and it ws way before the filter bag type now being used. Then it was a putty knife and scrape the crud out. It worked very well then so it must work much better now.

Thanks for your input Jeff,
