An incident recently took place at the high school in the town I live in, where a teacher/coach was arrested for sexual misconduct with students. My youngest daughter is in the school system, although she is currently in the Middle School. Next year she will be playing volleyball on the team..

We have a football coach at my work, I told him about the situation and he told me as far as coaching goes, it should be male coaches coaching male students and female coaches coaching female students. My question was, what do I do if it’s a male coach, am I not supposed to let her play volleyball? His answer was pretty much no I shouldn’t.

I don't completely agree, why should my child have to suffer because the coach may be male?

My thought was that if I can spend as much time as possible at her practices and games, getting to know the coach more and his back ground it would be ok.

What do you think?

I say get to know the coach. You can't judge 'him' based on another's bad actions.
Get other people's opinions on the guy... if he's been coaching very long, then there are other parents who know him and how he deals with the kids.... ask them.

Get information... it's the best defence against a possible problem.

Just because one guy is a skuz bucket, doesn't make them all.

karen got a question
Are you a very trusting person?

if you are there is nothing wrong about it but i have learned that some people that can't be trusted cuz some have just a little good that they have just to turn around to show they have more evil then good.

just my opion so take it as an opion or report me to admin

Maybe you misunderstand what I mean IE.... I mean, get to know the coach that will be her daughter's coach.... not the guy that was arrested.
The guy that was arrested should spend some time in prison.... if he is indeed guilty.

Thank you, that's what I thought I would do. :) I think the coach I talked to was doing some judging in regards to it. I'm trying to keep an open mind. That's why I thought I'd ask what others might do.

My oldest daughter wasn't into sports, so this all new to me. :)

beanie, waaaayyyy back when...when I was a high schooler, we had a coach that did this. He was the sr. girls b-ball coach and he ended up actually leaving town in the middle of an undefeated season with one of the star female ball players!

Boy, were we pissed...he should have at least brought her back on game nights! Seriously, if you spend some time around the coach and some of their practices, you should get a pretty good idea of what the coach is all about. There was little surprise for us.

You know how teenage girls are and when something like that is going on, it's only a secret to those with blindfolds on. My opinion.

Don't fret...just keep your eyes open!

You can try all you want to get to know the coaches BUT if they want something hid you'll never find it.

By all means keep in the picture - let them know your really a part of your daughters sports activities.

But also make sure your daughter knows how to advocate for herself and her safety. You know what I mean?

Yes I do Tabi, and thank you. I will let her participate in sports, I will be involved. I will do what I can to make sure she understands right and wrong and to not be afraid to tell someone. ;)
