A short story to provide insight into the everyday rigors faced by your LEOs out here. As you all know, it's a tough job, but you just have no idea how tough it can be at times. ;)
As some of y'all know, we LEO types sometimes set up these "sobriety checkpoints". Well, one of the "wheels" at the capitol expressed an interest in participating in one with the local troopers here in the western part of the state a while back, so a date was set, a location piccked complete with alternate site, and an operational plan drawn up, a line supervisor selected, and men were solicited from several areas to work 4 or 8 hour shifts on their day off for OT pay on the date selected, there would be a 4 hour checkpoint set up 10pm-2am and the other 4 hours were to be patrol hours. I arrive with the rest of the troopers from other directions, there are maybe 10 of us there in all. While the "wheel" doesn't show up, we do have two Sgts. and a Lt. We set up the cones and flares and position patrol cars according to the printed plan, and start checking traffic promptly at 10 pm.
I'll bet y'all thought we just did these things on spur of the moment with little planning?
Anyway, after a couple hours of checking cars, this small white car pulls up with a young, curvy hispanic lady driving, complete with blonde hair. She's dressed in some designer jeans with sequins and a white form fitting top also with sequines in patterns around the low cut neck ... she is outfitted to "catch the eye". :freaked: She is very "candid" and tells me she has left her license at home a few miles down the road. I get her vitals (date of birth, driver number, name) to run a check and explain that I am issuing a summons for "No OL in Possesion", that she can go get it after I am done and bring it back before 2am and I can mark it complied with law, or she can take it by the court anytime before court. She asks if her boyfriend can go get it, and I said "sure, but I can't let you go until I'm done". My dispatcher is having trouble locating her name in the DMV files and there is the possibility that she is suspended or not licensed so that is the "why" of that.
She gets out of the car and says she'll stay there until he returns (her idea), he shows me his license, and he leaves in her car. So I'm standing there with her, trying to write and waiting for my checks response, and we move over into the edge of a parking lot alongside the roadway. After few minutes, I am joking with her, she's getting cool (it's "nippy" out there) and I notice that every one that is supposed to be checking traffic including the Lt.... is watching us. She's really funny, telling me about her time in California where she started with the blonde hair.
Soon, it's like 40 minutes later and here comes her boyfriend finally, whew .... I was worried that one of us was going to have to give her a ride home. After she showed me her OL, I "CWL"ed it, and she and he left after chatting a few more minutes, they both were funny. He runs a resturant, she works there. The rest of the guys got a real kick out of the whole thing, and the Lt. was veryu complimentary of my "entertainment", I think he was "miffed" that I didn't call him over for backup.
Anyways, it was a great detail, I got paid well enough, I didn't catch any DUIs that night, but I did catch some good equipement and suspended license violations, and had some great fun in the process ...... :)
