Thats a tricky question. Some CAN afford them ,while others want to look cool and put other bills at risk, hoping that next week will be better.
It is ok to "trick out" the truck, just do a little at a time. I have seen to many O/O spend for toys and then have money problems with being short on cash.

I believe for some drivers it's just where they like to spend their extra dollars.Dressing up the truck with chrome & lights is like a hobby to them.
Nothing wrong with this as long as you don't let the "goodies" budget start eating into the maintenance budget.

I have a chrome (SS actually) fetish, but I have rules. Anything that needs to be replaced, gets replaced with something that looks better, but I don't take off good parts just to replace with SS, UNLESS... I also have a SS fund, every evening I take everything smaller than a $20 and put it in my coffee can. When I happen across a place to shop, I count the can and spend close to that amount if I see something I want. The only way I've found to cheat on that is by breaking 20s for everything, which I do, it makes the can fat faster. :D
BTW, I don't cut corners to buy goodies, it's all disposable income, not $$ needed for anything. I have met people that were complaining about how they were going to make it with fuel prices/revenue.... who were buying goodies. Seems stupid to me.

I've often wondered that question myself DC/MD.
I've bought 'goodies' when I owned a truck, but like Truckdobe, I did it a little at a time and only when it didn't cut into the budget. I also installed the stuff myself, thus saving a lot of $$$ too.
A couple years ago at a truck show, I watched them present a check for $30,000 to the winner. :yikes: A guy could buy a truckload of SS and chrome for that amount of $$$.
A couple months later I passed that same truck out west. At the time, it seemed like 'just another truck' having a hard time pulling the grade s/b outta Mesquitte NV.
It'd be pretty nice to just go around from one truck show to another just showing off the truck though. ;)

Some do it the DUMB WAY , I was at KW dealer and this guy was figuring out how $ he could spend on DRESSUP items when ordering his truck , salesman said SORRY :harhar: you were APPROVED for X$'s nothing more guy flipped out the OLD VISA :yikes: against his wifes input and topped it out with alot of GLITTER.
I dressup my trucks / trailers with the basics would rather have nicer interiors and comfort than too many lights and glitter that others get to see as they go up / down the road.
Big Dave  on the new job and the PETE yor driving
