View Full Version : How can I get it through their heads?

Operations doesn't seem to understand!

1. I license my truck for 38 states. I don't WANT TO run the N.E.

2. I refuse to haul cabinet loads because they get percentage off the 'unload pay'. Since they're not in the trailer helping me tailgate the cabinets (our office personnel), I refuse to haul them. eg: I was offered a load w/ 15 drops. At $40 per drop minus 28.5% is $28.60 per drop to me = $439. While $439 is good money to tailgate the load, why can't I have the entire $600? I'm not covered under your Workman's Comp Insurance. I have to provide my own. The same holds true if there is only 3 drops. $28.60 per drop = $85.80 for a full trailer. Hmmm...the load with 15 drops has roughly the same amount of cabinets, why not the same 'drop pay'? It ain't right, so I refuse to do it.

3. What part of 'I hate toll roads' don't you understand? 2 weeks ago I spent $69 on tolls just to go from S. Beloit IL to Cleveland OH. Tolls have more than doubled in some areas but our rates to those areas haven't gone up to reflect compensation for the additional cost. I do NOT get reembursed for tolls. Besides, I get raped enough on fuel taxes.

4. What part of 'No Chicago' don't you understand? I have a high 5th wheel (50"), and there's low bridges, toll roads all over and they drive like idiots down there. Rates haven't risen to cover the additional cost of the tolls.

5. No PNW (OR & WA). Fuel is too expensive up there.

6. No loads south of Gainesville FL unless there is an extra $1 per mile to compensate for possibly having to deadhead up to GA for a load. eg: Gainesville FL to Miami FL 'Estimated Total Driving Distance:
442 miles'. The rate better be at least $442 more. My truck costs the same to operate empty as it does loaded, the only benefit that I see is slightly higher fuel mileage.

Am I being too 'picky'? I don't think so. I'll go anywhere else as long as the rate is profitable for me. I'm just trying to watch out for my bottom line!

Any suggestions as to how to get through to them?

Dave, this coupled with your "My dilema/problem" thread, says (to me) that your company is doing one of two possibles:

1). Freight may have slowed down for whatever reason, or they lost a contract somewhere; and these loads may be all they have to offer.

or

2). Other drivers (that usually cover loads to those areas) are *itching and moaning that they "are sick of those loads and want to run where that Dave guy usually does".

I don't know what to tell you.

As I said in your other thread; (what I would do, and have done) give it two or three more pay periods---and if things don't look (or feel) like they are going to change move on.

Dave,Good frieght is slow every where for the most part. I would go in the office and re-negotiate the contract or put an addendum on it for ALL Lumper Pay going to you. It can be done and is worth the effort.

I tried that the other day. It didn't work. :wtf: I did however have a chat with the bossman and he said that he's heard the same thing from other drivers. He said he's throwing ideas around to make it more fair for all parties (the company & the driver). He's thinking about a set rate per drop. I know that he's trying to figure out how to make it so they still get 'their cut'. :wtf:
