Sometimes we are asked to haul things in a dry box, that at first thought we think it is going to be impossible to do safely.

Take for example Steel Coils.

You are dealing with heavy weight, low cube, frieght. that is also irregular shaped, and can move quite readily in the trailer.

In the following pictures you will see how a load weighing 47,365 lbs, and placed on 14 Pallets was loaded, and secured, in a dry box trailer.

One thing I learned early on, the hard way of course, is to carefully check the condition of the wood used for the blocking.

I hauled some copper coils one time and the wood provided to me by the shipper turned out to be partially rotted which I did not realize until I got several hundred miles up the road and got pulled around behind the scale due to having almost 37k on the drivers because almost every pallet had slid to the front even though I had used twice the blocking that the shipper required.

:D Makes much more sence to me now!!

Thanks Uturn. If they were all on 1 side I can sure tell you 1 driver whom would NOT of hooked to it.. :)

I saw a driver a couple of days ago just south of Denton on I-35 pulling a skateboard with a load of coils he had just un-tarped.

They had been placed "eye to the sky" on pallets and apparently were not secured to said pallets.

Not sure what happened, but like I said he had the load un-tarped and it appeared that he had to get on the brakes and the coils had come off of the pallets.

Luckily though they were still all on his trailer.

That was one stupid flatbedder. He should have put a strap across each of the pallets or pair of pallets if they were loaded that way. The tarp wouldn't do anything to keep them on the pallets nor on the trailer. He/she also should have paid attention to the road and remembered what he had on the back.
