About UPS delivery drivers

Have any of you LEOs' ever stopped and or ticketed one of these guys?

You know; the delivery van (residential) drivers for UPS?

Ever since I can remember, these guys/gals have been tearing up and down residential roads at mach speeds, running stop signs, and just plain driving like nobody else matters.

If you have stopped them, what seems to be the popular "excuse"?
If you have not stopped one of them WHY?

Just watch them. Next time you see one, watch him/her without being seen. They will amaze and mystify you to no end.

40 or 50 miles an hour in a 25 mph zone-----hammering from stop sign to and through another stop sign.

I'm sick of them, and plan to call the cops every time I see one doing something stupid! I just don't want to tie up 911 with a traffic complaint, and don't want to spend the buck each time to cal 411 for a local Police number....any suggestions?

It's time (in my opinion) to put the smack down on these UPS douches, and get the word out that their driving habits will not be tolerated in your area.

If I was a cop; I would (just short of harrassment), be on these guys like flies on.................

If they do not have the time in their shift to deliver all their stops----maybe they should take a closer look a their policies and/or put two trucks in the higher delivery areas. I don't know, I don't care-----what I do care about is to stop getting spooked at intersections by a UPS van barreling down on a stop sign so quick you're affraid their comming through----and a lot of times they do just run right through!

Keep your eyes on them please any LEO's reading this......and Protect the public from these mad men/woman, and Serve your public by punishing them offten enough to make their Corporates impose a new policy or make some kind of change.

Good question White Dog & while we're at it what about charter bus drivers.These guys drive like wild men!!I have only ever seen 1 bus pulled over since I've been driving.Makes me wonder what he did.

LSMR, I can do much with charter bus companies as they don't tend to travel the highway I work. But I agree they do run a little fast.

White Dog, I do see your complaint as in other cities I have seen this. The only UPS driver I know delivers to my step Dads company. He also delivers to my home. I can't think of his name off hand but he is fairly responsible in our neighbor hood. As at any point during the day or night there is at least on Police car parked along our street. (either mine or my neighbors who work for the Sheriffs Dept. or the NCSHP) I asked him once while at my step Dads why he runs to and from deliveries. He says, "I can run safely to my truck than run faster to my deliveries." I took that to mean that he can run to make up time rather than run faster through neighborhoods.

But like I said I have seen them fly through towns without due reguard to others. To be honest in the town I live in it is the Postal workers that drive like morons. I have pulled along side of them and told them to watch their speed. I only chew my tobacco once. (that refers to, I will be nice the first time, the second time you will may be held up for a few minutes) I think that since I live in the town I work in I am just bypassing the middle man and going straight to the source. I listen to my neighbors complaints and act acoordingly to them.

That is another part of the job alot of you may not understand. My neighbors know that I am a Cop in the city. They tell me and expect me to handle said problems within my capacity. It isn't like I get off at 7 and I am done. My neighbors complain, though not very much, and I am expected to handle it since my neighborhood is part of my assigned zone. I don't get paid any more for this as I am salary, but it is part of the job and I knew that going in. My other LEO neighbors do not have this problem as they are county Sheriffs and a Highway Patrolman.

You only see the UPS or other del trucks because of the size and color. Yes, I agree they do seem to run fast but if you watch them MOST do not drive recklessly.UPS has one of the best safety records in the industry
It is the same as truckers in a truck stop parking lot. 25 or 30 mph isn't fast on the street but tend to do it on the lot. These are the ones that will will hit and kill someone some day.

I find that the young age drivers that think they have to wait till they are 20 feet from the stop sign to even begin to slow down.

these are the worst drivers and those are the ones to stop and ticket. Hit the pocket book and they usually learn. Arse chewing doesn't seem to do the trick.

I'm sure he UPS drivrs White Dog is referring to just recntly got promoted to that position from working the docks at the hub, and haven't experienced the wrath of being busted by a UPS supervisor for doing something stupid.

As big of a company as UPS is, they have to do everything they can to protect themselves from being involved in accidents that can result in legal action against them.

Many drivers who run "local", whether it's the UPS guys or the fuel tankers that deliver to convenience stores around town, often become overconfident & complacent, and that can result in some serious accidents.

O.k. so now the question has changed. I understand they have almost 55,000 trucks and 64,000 drivers----but wouldn't you think (with a list like that) that the company (or Mr. G. Brown) would come down hard with a "2 strikes your out" policy or something simalar?

I say 2 strikes, because anyone can mess up once.....but after that, if they know they are going to lose their job should they have a second incident----most people will slow down and pay attention.

These yahoos are getting paid by the hour.....why such a hurry all the time?

WD, Having about eight years in this segment of the industry I can tell you it has to do with productivity. I won't go into all the logistics of it but in short drivers are judged on performance continuously and most of the review is based on stops per hour. They have a by 10 sph and a by 12 sph.

I am in no way suggesting this gives them the authority to drive recklessly or the like but in order for a driver with UPS, FEDEX, or DHL to get a break or have small talk with a customer they have to make it up somewhere. Usually it is in the form of speeding and running to and from small delivery stops.

The one thing that irks me more than any is the fact they double park, park in tow away zones , handicap spots, fire lanes and the like all to no punishment. Wanna know why? They pay a semi annual or annual fee to the local "sinking fund". Supposedly this covers them from misc. slap on the wrist parking tickets. :wow:

I didn't stop untill I was almost touching his van and then walked back and held him there for about 15 minutes chewing on his azz.

His excuse was...."I was just going to be a second".

This, to me, would indicate that management encourages reckless driving, since incentive and/or "next raise" is based on stops per hour.

If a UPS driver has come into unexpected bills at home, or if their child has a birthday comming up etc....UPS driver knows all he/she has to do to get ahead is fly up to and through each stop sign.
"Oh sh*t, I got 20 minutes left to make at least three more stops, and the next two are 3 and 5 miles away.....I'll never make it. Oh yes I will!!! Out of my way jackazz!!!

While this (for some reason) seems hard to belive----I can picture it.

I noticed most of the speeding violations were in 55 and 60mph states. Those speeds are too slow and hazardous to begin with but I agree about
not speeding in residential areas. IF Im backing into a dock with a truckload of pallets and its going to take me 10-15 min. to back up Im usually courteous to let the Ups or Fedex van driver go first since he only has a few packages and leaves in less than 5 min. The point here is to crack down on drivers speeding in residential areas. Leave the drivers on the interstate doing 70-75mph alone.

Many drivers who run "local", whether it's the UPS guys or the fuel tankers that deliver to convenience stores around town, often become overconfident & complacent, and that can result in some serious accidents.

Cap't, you hit the nail on the head right there. I see the same behavior from local 4-wheelers to dump truck and cement truck to delivery drivers within their locale. It reminds me of an old phrase, applied mainly, in its' original context, to marriage, but applies here very well;

"Familiarity breeds contempt" for the regs, rules and warnings in a familiar setting that is inreality not static.

I see that list of tickets stretches over about 2 years. It seems that it's maybe 2 or 3 tickets a day. That doesn't sound too bad to me. With all the drivers they have doing hundreds of miles a night,, that sounds pretty good. Of course, I was a package car driver for 16 years and a feeder driver for 9 years. I don't ever remember being told or encouraged to disregard speed limits and stop signs. I don't doubt that it happens, but I never heard it happening. In fact, if I remember correctly, each center has a fund that UPS contributed a predetermined amount per day for each accident free month. The drivers collectively get to do with the money what they want. (Fishing trip, picnic, etc.) . There is a generous safety award program.
