View Full Version : The cost of satellite radio as I see it.

I have been looking at getting Sirius radio for some time now, but the monthly fee keeps me from taking the plunge. It’s not that I’m terribly cheap, but I do hate paying for something that I can get for free. Sure Sirius might be better in many ways, but the price, though low, is still more expensive then free.

Then it hit me the other day, as I was listening to the radio. I was trying to get a little music to listen to. I didn’t care what it was, just needed to cover the background noise from the motor. I hit the scan button, and was given a few seconds of each station available. The problem was that I scanned the entire band, and still hadn’t heard any music I liked. The majority of what I heard was stinking commercials.

I understand that radio stations have costs to cover, and need to have these commercials, but there seems to be more of them than anything else these days. If I could put 2 quarters into the radio, and make all the commercials go away, I would gladly do it.

At a cost of less than $15 a month, that’s less money than putting 2 quarters each day into the radio. This is looking like a very small cost for not having to listen to some idiot telling me that I can “…make 6 figures while sitting in my kitchen, in my pajamas.” And if I never hear another advertisement for “…thick,..rich,..choclatey Ovaltine” it will be too soon.

So, I have to wait till after Christmas, to see if Santa brings me the Sirius Radio Kit I’ve been checking out. If he doesn’t, I’ll be getting myself one a day or two after. And I promise you I will never, ever complain about the monthly fee, so long as it keeps those idiotic commercials off my radio.

Due to the commercials on FM, I bought an XM unit for my pickup even though I don't drive it much.

Don't know about Sirius, but if you get XM, you get XM online free too.

Either way, for less than $15 a month, it's well worth the cost.

I really like to listen to "talk" while I am driving, especially stories. I was spending about $40 a month on audiobooks so the $12.95 a month fee for XM was a big savings in my book.

The only thing that was "aggravating" was that less than a month after I got my Roady 2 I seen them at a Petro for 1/2 of what I paid for mine.

As many hours a day as I listen to the radio (mostly for music, and for news & talk about 1 hour a day), paying for XM Radio and what it has to offer is no big deal to me.

What's funny is how some people will gripe about paying for satellite radio, and then after talking to them, you learn they're paying over $50 a month for cable or satellite TV that doesn't have hardly anything worth watching these days (a bunch of copycat "virtual reality" shows). :wtf:

When I was getting my old 89 IHC 9670 ready to run daily I decided to replace the am/fm cassete radio with a new am/fm cd radio.I bought a OEM replacement which I paid way to much for in my opinion. When I started running trailers longer distances & after reading so many good things here about sattelite radio I decided to buy one.

XM radio is one of the best things I spent money on.For an extremly low price you can tune your favorite channel in & listen to it all day. With all the channel selections you never run out of something to listen to.

My only regret is that I replaced the old radio(which worked fine). For what I paid for the new radio I could have paid my XM subscription for a long long time.

Get your XM or Sirius radio ASAP.You'll never regret it

I got XM. I like it but not as much as when I first got it. I get commercials there too and I am now paying for the darn things.
I like getting the weather for major citys with the push of a button but a lot of the rest sucks big time.I got real tired of the comedy channel. Jokes aren't bad just the leadins and promos.

I do get on line with it at home but the 171 truckers channel is not on the online line up.

I have at home SAT TV, CABLE internet. I Love the speed of the cable internet but the sat tv is lacking in real programing today.
I would trade them 60 channels for only 5 real channels but they won't listen.
I live in a small town with limited TV reception. The radio stations in air are doing way too much RAP garbage and todays country music sucks big time.
So I still rent audio books now and again to hear a story clear through with out commercials.

I will keep the XM for bit longer, I think they will make some changes if they listen to us. IF the big word here.

5 million customers now and still growing and at $ 12.95 a month minimum they can't give us better programming.????
If I am correct and it has been along time since I went to school but isn't that close to $64 million a month?

I've got XM. Even though I run TX only, I found myself channeling surfing for something I liked. Then about the time I found what I liked, I lost the signal.

For our anniversary, the Mrs. got me a Creative Zen Jukebox with a 60g hardrive. So, I put our CD collection on it and have been hooking it up to the 1/8" plug in the truck radio.

Now, I need new speakers for the truck!!!!!!

Jimbo sat radio is great. HSLD said it best. The only time you'll lose the signal is when the antenna can't see the sat , like a tunnel or a deep valley. The music channels don't have commericals. Its worth the the cost.
