My Compaq lap top lid is kaput. Presario 1200.
One day I opened it and it fell to the back no tension to hold it up. SO now I have to lean it up against something to use it.

Can the hinges be tightened back up?

I don't want to have to buy a new lid or case.
If it comes to that I will pop for a new Lap top.

If not, it sure would be a great idea for some trucker to come up with a new hinge design. Say one that has an adjustment screw in the end that swells up with a 1/4 turn or so to retighten .
Kind of like a molly bolt

C' mon Jimbo get er done.

look closely at the portion of the screen frame near the overlapping portions that form the hinge. Most have 'plugs' over screws used to secure the hinge assembly. Some can be re-tightened, although it does not always help.

Thanks for all the ideas!! I have a six year old IBM Thinkpad on which the hinges went kaput several years ago. Been making sure I have a book, cup - anything - behind it to keep it from falling.
While Uglypuppy (my husband) has a new Toshiba with nice, working hinges, I'm partial to my old IBM and don't want to replace it - yet.
Will try the suggestions!!!!!

If you own a Dell laptop, some of them have Phillips screws for the hinge plates that can loosen over time. Keep 'em tight, but don't overtighten them to the point of damaging the hinge plates.

I have a new Toshiba laptop that I'm using now, and it has some pretty stout hinges on its screen.
