The election for the 2006 IBT Administration just got real interesting. Tyson Johnson, International Vice President and head of the IBT Freight Division, announced that he will be running for the position of President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. It appears that some of the other Vice Presidents from around the country and Canada will join him on his slate.
Evidently their has been some contention within the administration and Mr Johnson feels that he can lead the IBT in a better direction. Nothing has been said from IBT Pres. Jim Hoffa at this point but I am sure we will be hearing alot from him.
Since taking the Presidency in 1998, Hoffa and the new adminstration have brought the Teamsters Union back from bankruptcy to a strong union that has a good record in organizing and renewing strong contracts for the frieght industry and UPS.
Another contender for office is Tom Leedham, who is affiliated with Teamsters for a Democratic Union. The group has been said to have gathered over 55,000 signatures to put Leedham on the 2006 ballot.
(info gathered from various labor related sources, but the opinions stated are mine.)
