View Full Version : Wow, will it ever end?

Well, it's been something else this week. We worked a CARE weekend Fri-Sun and I got so many service calls, wrecks at truck stops, wrecks at Wallmart, and then these two wrecks on the road that involved hit and run drivers, one being a stolen vehicle, that I hardly had a chance to work any real traffic enforcement. Last night and tonight were my "paperwork" catch up nights so that in the early morning (Thurs) I can head south for a week off (car is packed mostly, gifts, etc ...)
Well, last night was even worse. We ran non stop all night, call after call. Man and wife from SC going to NY call two hours up the road and want me to go to rest area and look around the yard, sidewalks, restrooms, etc for her oversized wedding band that "falls off occasionally" as that was the last place they saw it on her finger, before she walked the dog. I gave them the rest area phone number to check to see if it had been turned in. :wow:
Get a call for the first time in years to help fire police block the road at a structure fire, then the emergency services co-ordinator pulls up at the rear of a line of fire trucks, bails out after setting brake, grabs a wheel chock, and turns to put it under the wheel only to find the converted bus is rolling, and the whole time I and a fire police is shouting "It's rolling", and he throws the chock down and the bus hops it like it's a pebble, and then he jumps in front of it and tries to stop it as we shout "Get out of the way", and he gfinally does after a moment, and just before it runs into a parked heavy fire truck, that didn't budge. Bent bumpers and step plates, and one very embarassed co-ordinator. but he's not walking around with out legs which was looking like a strong possibility there for a few moments. :)
Had three calls to wrecks at the several truck stops that I responded to myself last night, parking lots 1/2 full but drivers making turns while not paying attention, talking on phone, thinking of Christmas, hitting parked trucks, with acres of room? All non reportable, as on private property, but it still steels time. :wtf:
We never even got to stop long enough for a cup of coffee or supper last night.
Tonight, I'm taking my meal, I'm getting my reports done, at 10 I am going off duty, and at 1am I am headed south, and I'll be back next week. Anything else is "gravy"!!!
Merry Christmas to all .............

Well, I took off an hour early, it's been really quiet tonight.... and I needed it to get those weekly activity reports and my two wreck reports and my two investigative reports (these investigative reports take a lot of time with the narratives) done so I can leave, as the deadlines all are well before I get back next week. If tonight had gone like last night, I would have had to work overtime instead of taking off early. :type:
I had one call all night tonight, I was able to drop the paperwork long enough to go take care of it. It was a minor accident that looked like it was going to be another hit and run, but all worked out well and the two parties are actually old aquaintenances, one was a retired agent, and the other was the sister of another retired agent who worked closely with the first ... many years ago, they knew each other. She just didn't know she hit his car down at the resturant. When I went to talk to her at her house (a waitress got the tag number, I ran it and went to look at her car), I was forced to consume some home made cookies too (shaped like strawberries, made of cocanut, and flavored with strawberry flavoring, and colored red .... and very tasty!). :harhar:
Well ..... Once again ..........and then it's so long for a few days .......
Merry Christmas to all!

Next time you may want to consider filling out an accident report:
§390.5 Definitions.
Unless specifically defined elsewhere, in this subchapter:
Accident means—
(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2) of this definition, an occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle operating on a highway in interstate or intrastate commerce which results in:
(i) A fatality;
(ii) Bodily injury to a person who, as a result of the injury, immediately receives medical treatment away from the scene of the accident; or
(iii) One or more motor vehicles incurring disabling damage as a result of the accident, requiring the motor vehicles to be transported away from the scene by a tow truck or other motor vehicle.
(2) The term accident does not include:
(i) An occurrence involving only boarding and alighting from a stationary motor vehicle; or
(ii) An occurrence involving only the loading or unloading of cargo.
Highway means any road, street, or way, whether on public or private property, open to public travel. "Open to public travel" means that the road section is available, except during scheduled periods, extreme weather or emergency conditions, passable by four-wheel standard passenger cars, and open to the general public for use without restrictive gates, prohibitive signs, or regulation other than restricitons based on size, weight, or class of registration. Toll plazas of public toll roads are not considered restrictive gates.
On several occassions I've added accidents to a motor carrier while reviewing loss run reports and discovering a tow away where a hood was removed from one or the other vehicle.
Be safe.

My state's code is my guide, and it defines when accidents are reportable to my state's DMV on forms provided by DMV (it makes DMV the deciding entity), and they do not want reports on accidents which do not occur on "public property" as DMV defines it as evidenced by the following excerpt from the manual they also prepared and provided, so we don't report an accident to them unless it meets their criteria. I understand that code may be read more inclusive, but if the agency I am reporting to on forms privided by them do not want them, then they come back to me and go into the round file as I have no one else to send them to.
Crashes meeting the severity criteria occurring on public property are reportable to the DMV. Public property is considered to be highways, roads, streets and public parking lots maintained by state, county or municipal funds. Crashes occurring on private property, even though they may meet the severity criteria, are not reportable to the DMV.
If they change their instructions, then I'll change my habits as will the rest of LEOs in the state. This doesn't mean that accidents aren't investigated or that charges aren't placed even on private parking lots, they often are and charges placed ... but still no report to DMV as they aren't interested. ;)
Take care all ............. and Happy New Years.

We do accidents in PVA's but not required by the State.
I do them anyway to CMA. Just a habit for me, but not a requirement.
