With the price of the cost to run today it is getting close to just being a company driver with out the hassle of an O/O..

Are you making plans to change the way you do bussiness or maybe thinking about a company position??

I would only consider being a company driver again only for the Health Benefits package which I no longer need now. I have my own 401.

Overcoming the high cost of doing business as an O/O is part of being an O/O ( small business person)
It is more than fueling the truck and having the oil changed every 15,000 miles and collecting the settlement checks ea week.

Being a sucessful O/O whether you have your own aurthority or not means staying abreast of the industry and the inovations and new rules and regs and above all operate at a profit with the information available to you.
You must be willing to change the way you do things including SLOWING DOWN or learning to use the progressive shifting.
You must learn to resist the urge to buy chrome and lights or play the robber games like Cherry machines if you are on the edge of failing.
YOU MUST be able to PLAN PLAN PLAN and to be able to execute the plan.

You have to know who your competition is and how to handle it,( them.)

You have to have a good accountant to help you make the right moves, to know when to change some ways you do things, to let you know where you are going wrong, Or doing it right.
A good accountant will see that you pay the smallest tax you legally can and to seek every benefit from the Govt you can get.
Your accountant is your partner.

Way too many drivers are really dispatch drivers ( have to be told where to go and every thing concerning the load and truck and their hand held all the way) and THINK they want to be an O/O and it is a very serious mistake to leave your postiion as a company driver.

Dispatch drivers seldom succeede at leasing on to a carrier like Landstar.

I am an O/O. I love the challange, the money I earn, the product I haul, and the independance I have.
The company I am leased to has no problem getting me where I want to go and home when I want to. I go where I want most of the time.

Being an O/O is not for every one.
After being in the drivers seat for about 35 years I think I like it and will stay here for a day or two longer.

Pretty good reply there Nitestar.

That is why so many O/O go under. They think they are only drivers who "own" the truck and nothing more.

Good post Nitestar.

As an O/O, you've got to work today, while thinking of tomorrow, and planning for the day after tomorrow and beyond.

When your costs go up, your rates need to go up. Economics 101. The guys that are going under are the dummies that haul cheap freight to pay their fuel to get them to better freight. That's good, less trucks, higher rates. See how this works? :D

I am going to wait till i get more experience and at the same time save up some money for down payment.than i can buy a truck and put on and the truck is mine.as long as i make the payments.
