As far as I know you need to have a drivers license to be able to obtain a CDL, right?
What I was wondering is that since I live in Finland and donīt have a license in the USA, am I able to get a drivers license even if I donīt live there?
Like if Iīd take a few months vacation over there, would I be able to get a US drivers license even if Iīm only on vacation and donīt live there?
I was just thinking that if I ever want to get on the road there it might be smart to go get the license in advance :wow: and then if Iīd get hired one day I would have it ready :fishing:
Anyone know anything about that? I do have the license required here in Finland but that isnīt helping me much over there :ninja:

As far as I know in the state of Texas all you have to do is present a birth certificate showing you are16 years of age or older, take the written examination and pass, take the driving examination and pass and pay the fee and voila your a licensed driver.
CDL test is basically the same only a little more complicated as there are several parts to the written examination and you must have access to a CMV to take the road test.

Maybe I have to take my vacation to Texas then :D
Well the good thing is that Iīm able to take the test and get the license. Canīt you get a truck from a CDL school or something if you donīt have an employer that could give it to you for the road test? This could be a difficult situation because I donīt have many friends cruising around in a Class 8 vehicle :wow:

I may be wrong but don't you have to show citizenship to get a license? Like birth cerficate and S/S card?

You maybe right too because I donīt have a clue.
I was just wondering that how do the people get a license that for example comes over there with a 6 month work visa? :wow:

Foxy I'm sure it varies state to state but in Texas for just a Class C operators license all you need is a birth certificate and pass the exams.
As far as a CDL is concerned..................That is not a question that crossed my mind as I am and have always been a citizen of the USA.
However I do not think that is a requirement for a CDL as there are many foreigners with work visas living here.
I lived in Spain for several years and was told by their equivalent to our DMV's that I was ok to operate a motor vehicle as long as I was insured to do so.

By the way if you are granted a work visa you will recieve a Social Security card.
My first wife was from Barcelona and she was classifed as a "Resident Alien"
She was not a US citizen but had the right to work, pay taxes, pay social security.

OK I understand. I just remember I had to show birth certificate and S/S to get mine in Fl. and Mississippi.

If you are on vacation here and are just wanting to drive a car, the US will honor, on a temporary basis, foreign drivers liscence. I beleive this is allowed for up to 30 days.
For those who seek to obtain a normal liscence it is the same as everyone else.
You must show a birth certificate
2 or 3 other forms of ID to "prove" you are who you say you are.
