I had the older 12.7L in my International- was a great engine.

Don't know much about the 14L engines, but our company is now getting Freightliners with these engines instead of the 12.7L.

I know the EGR 12.7L engines are horrible though. The last truck I drove had one.

Buy a Cat. :p

Oh, and don't give me that crap that Cat's are more expensive to repair than Detroits. They aren't.

All motors are expensive to repair.

On the Cat I had, I had an inframe done at 887,xxx miles. It went to 1,45x,xxx miles before a rod cap let loose.

Other than that, the only 'engine' work that I had to have done (other than normal engine maintenance like running the overhead), was replacing 4 injectors over the 6 years I owned the truck.

This is the motor only. Not including other stuff like turbo, alternator, starter, fuel pump, air compressor, etc.............

I fixed my mistake ...........

I have always liked my DD 12.7, I am not much on "new" stuff I have not heard about...

.............

Yeah, and don't forget to get an oil well to go with it- with a Cat you'll NEED it! I don't see hardly any of them getting anywhere close to 7 MPG or running well beyond 1,000,000 miles without a rebuild either. :harhar:

As far as repairs go, the Cummins N-14 is the least expensive big-bore engine to have work done on, and one of the most sought after engines in used trucks nowadays.

Parts & labor prices for Detroit engines have gone up in the last few years since Daimler-Chrysler/Freightliner got their hands into Detroit Diesel Corporation a few years ago.

my detroit is at this miles now and the bottom is all from factory, top was redone last fall and I was told to let bottom go as it was all but perfect...

I"m getting 7.4 mpg out of my 3406E w/10speed. However, I must add that it is a single axle and not a twin screw.

Buy a Cat

Would that be a calico or siamese? :p :p :p :p

While CAT engines tend to be good strong engines they have put out some crappy ones too. The C-12 comes to mind. Worst engine I have ever dealt with.

The 12.7 detroits are a good engine for the most part, as long as you keep them at 470 hp or less. The only problem I have seen with them is they like to leak oil.

The 500 hp detroit would be a fine engine if Detroit would ever come up with a reliable fix for the turbo problems.

Use Lucas oil products and solve this problem, mine are dry and clean.. :D

To me, the Cat C-12 is a tad bit small for OTR applications. Maybe in a cement mixer or something that rarely sees a lot of highway usage.

With that '95 Pete I had, I was getting 6.4 mpg while rolling, 5.9 mpg overall (according to the printout I got from Sioux City Pete on my last trip with it). That had a 3406E rated @ 455 hp.

That '04 Pete I was driving that had the ACERT C-15 in it was averaging 4.33 overall mpg (according to the CAT-ID on the dash). :yikes:

I've always thought and heard that the C-12 was just plain junk.

That, I don't know. I haven't heard anything one way or the other and also I don't know of anyone around here that's ran them OTR.

Well, like the rumor Cat's cost more to fix, I've always heard that the C-12 costs even more.

Well Fellows I will keep my old 3406C model cat overhauled at 1 mil miles all parts acceptablle as cores altorfer cat in cedar rapids said I could have keep going with it if I did not mind the oil consumtion,100,000 miles on it now and I can average 5.8 mpg if I don't get stupid factory set at 435 hp I don't need no freaking computer to run my truck I do fine.

Just like house cats, Cat engines are ok, as long as you don't mind dealing with the litter.

Cat motors little the highway with oil, turbo blades, and broken trucker hearts.

With Detroit there is no scheduled rods and mains, overhead, overhaul. do your periodic maintenance keep it under 500HP and you should have a good economical engine, pre egr of course.

Very true! The Detroit in my old International I sold is still running strong after 1,000,000 miles with the head & oil pan still never removed.

I did the bull gear in mine (794000) only cuz I've seen first hand what can happen if it let go, there was nothing wrong with it, it was strictly preventative
