Phoenix police shoot dead hostage taker

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHOENIX -- An armed man hijacked a Krispy Kreme delivery truck and led police on a chase across the city and into a shopping center, where officers shot and killed him after he took a 76-year-old man hostage.

The hostage was treated for injuries caused by police bullet fragments.

The pursuit started early Sunday in Peoria, on the west side of Phoenix, where an officer confronted the man for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle, said Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef.

The man pointed a gun at the officer, tried unsuccessfully to take another vehicle from customers and employees at a convenience store, then forced two Krispy Kreme employees to give him their delivery truck, Tellef said.

Officers pursued the truck across northern Phoenix to Scottsdale, where police spikes flattened three of the truck's tires.

The gunman forced his way into a closed Safeway store and took employee Patrick Corbett, 76, hostage, said Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark.

As he held a gun to Corbett's head and attempted to leave the store, a police officer shot the man in the back of the head, Clark said.

Corbett was hospitalized in stable condition, authorities said.

Police did not immediately release the gunman's identification.

One of our drivers has a son in the Florida State Patrol.

The son once broke off a pursuit of a speeding van when he realized that it was a Dunkin Donuts truck. He said he did not want pictures of that chase showing up on TV that night!

I was going to start a new thread, but the joke is so old I thought better to tag onto this one :)

A Dunkin' Donuts big truck was coming up the get-on ramp today, so I moved over, let him on, and -- after he called clear on the CB -- eased back over into the granny lane and thanked him.

A few miles later, starting uphill with him keeping up well, I called again on the CB to tell him that I was heavy and would be slowing, and for him to go ahead and pop out in the hammer lane if he wanted.

Which he did. And thanked me back on the CB. And that was about it, as he slowly pulled away (I guess donuts aren't heavy, they just make you that way), except...

I got to thinkin' about that donut thing... I called up on the CB again and, chuckling slightly, said:

"Hey DD, I bet you don't get any traffic tickets driving that thing, do ya?"

He replied: "Nope, but I get a helluva lot of DOT checks"

Hey TW  , do you recall a second trooper showing up just about 5:30 "ish" and then the younger one leaving, maybe recall the old fart telling someone they had a chance to be a hero driver by telling some in a work zone that it was time to "move on" on the ol'CB?

They called a trooper out because he had that "tree thing" and a truck out of fuel blocking the ramp at the exit and it was near the end of his shift, but somehow the truck blocking the ramp got gone before that other trooper got there.

Or was you "gone" by then? :wtf:

Just "that close" man, but no cigar .... and no bagels for me .....
