I can't stress how important it is to make an attempt to give yourself a "cushion" between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
I was in Houston yesterday, and after traveling there for many years, it still never ceases to amaze me how the flow of traffic on a freeway there can go from 60 MPH to a dead stop in the blink of an eye! :yikes:
This is even more serious in rainy conditions, and people do some pretty brain-dead stuff when it rains, no doubt!
The general rule of thumb is 1 second for every 10 MPH your truck is moving. At least double that in rain, and even more in snow and ice.

CC, you guys are a bunch of sissies down there. Hell here in NC we bump draft in traffic. You know, so you can get better MPG's.
Tailgating here is not a traffic offense, it is a sport, and one we do well you would think.
But it is a 4 pointer on the license though. :yikes:

Speaking of following distance, jeff.
I was cruisin down the road today in my sisters car at 10mph over the limit and here comes this white freightliner he comes right to within a few feet of my rear bumper, i gas it cause i thought he was going to hit me and he keeps up with me so i back down to 60mph and keep it there until i stopped at a store. The only time he backed off was when i put my blinker on a mile before the store. I'am not even in a truck yet and some of these drivers are ticking me off but i take it in stride. The 1 second rule should be used in any vehicle. I see alot of tailgateing in trucks down here near I-10. I think too many new drivers carry over bad habits from 4-wheelers to trucks.

Tim, that's why I never liked driving in NC. Those idiots on the road there made me fear for my own life more than they do in Los Angeles during a high-speed chase! :yikes:
Bamahillbilly, for the "BillyBigRigger" crowd, tailgating while going across I-10 or I-40 is a way of life.
I've seen many accidents here in town that could have been avioded by the driver not making it appear like he/she wants to put the nose of their "large car" up someone's rear! :yikes:

Ya know Jeff sometimes I am really glad I am in a 62mph truck. Well when I am IN a truck that is. Folks dont like being behind me so they dont stay there very long. The thing that drives me insane is, I sure wish they wouldnt come back so soon and take away my cushion. But then I just end up slowing down a bit till the cushion is back and by that time they are far enough and fast enough that I can get my cushion back.

I use 1 truck lenght (including trailer) for every 10 MPH.
My 9 axle makes me 100 at 60 div. by 10 means = 600 feet.

Well Jeff I can tell ya, dont let USAF speak for all of us in NC, also most of the drivers in NC now are retired Fla. people. And we all know how they drive :harhar:
