paid memberships
some sites have 'Premium' memberships that must be paid for. Here's a thread regarding them at another site that I used to be a regular at; now I'm just a troll

at the site I posted the link to with 'Premium' status you get to edit your posts and add attachments...yippee...

I was a member of another site that started paid memberships and no longer post there or even visit. Turned into a clique.

There was a huge waterfowl hunting site that out of the blue started to charge for memberships... They had a big fallowing 10s of thousands of members...
It took 10-15 months to close...

Surprisingly that site I used to belong to (I was a 'regular' member; NO WAY I'd pay; I've got better things to spend$25 a year on!) has been around since the late 90's
And they also whine because there's no magazines dedicated to their model of car

like Bookworm said, it creates a clique! At most of those kind of sites the members brag about being "Premium'!
