    Default 2 meter radio

I'm considering buying a 2 Meter Mobile radio. I don't know anyone who has one so I can get truthful information from.

Is there anyone here that is using 2 Meter and if so can you give me a typical communication distance on flat land and another in hilly terrain?
I understand it can be 20 to 75 miles, just need to verify if possible!

Pretty "technical" question.....and I for one have no idea what it means or how to answer it.

But I didn't want you to get no replies at all......so I suggest you ask over at the Electronics Forum maybe.

I use a $19.95 C.B. because it does everything I need it to do------it will reach ANY shipping/recieving office and/or security/traffic station, when it is my turn to accept a dock assignment while stageing.

I can also hear drivers in the fog or bad weather, when they want to warn me that there is a road blockage ahead, and I should "back-er-down".

Other than that? Who needs to talk to someone 25 miles away?

    Cool Re: 2 meter radio

Unless you have your ham license the ham radio is going to be of little use to you. It will have more power than a conventional CB and be capable of talking greater distances but if you stray off of the conventional cb frequencies you risk the possibility of being fined heavily by the FCC for illegal use of the radio, plus having the radio confiscated. You will be spending a lot of money for something that as WD pointed out can be accomplished with a $20.00 radio

Why don't you Amewrican use VHF radios ??? We've been getting away from CB's for a few years now. I have one here that runs 496 Channels.

I don't even have a radio in my truck. I just use my Nextel.

I am confused by this, can you talk to any other truck with a VHF radio??
or only if they are on the same frequency?
    can you change channels?
Do you need an assigned frequency/channel?? or can you use any channel you like?

We have radios that look just like that, but we can only talk to trucks within our own company, and we can not change channels.
we can talk a long distance, usually 40-50 miles or more.

our base station radios will easily reach 60 miles with a big enough antenna

What you have sounds like a VHF. The one I have has 496 channels programmed into it. Hell, I even have Alberta RCMP Channels. You need an Industry Canada Licence for your own frequency but have access to any channel you program into it.

but it would be illegal for you to transmit on the RCMP channel wouldn't it?
can you transmit digital signal? the OPP around here are using digital.

and you need to know what frequency/channel trucks for other companys are running if you want to hear/talk to them?

ya i think we probly could change frequencys on our radios to talk to other companies, but we only have one frequency programmed in.

if i knew how to program in another frequency that would work well if i get sent on rental to work for another company all day, i could likely switch over their frequency, which would be nice, and then at least i would know whats going on, instead of being the only truck out of the loop.

No big deal. Do a search of any company in Canada and get their frequencies.
